Former first lady and mother to President Bush said Monday that evacuees from New Orleans have found a home in Houston.
"Almost everyone Ive talked to says we're going to move to Houston," Barbara Bush told NPR.
"What Im hearing is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.
"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this (she chuckles slightly)--this is working very well for them."
Editor & Publisher notes the former First Lady's remarks were aired this evening on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" program.
Developing...
Ummm...this isn't 1920. Life in the U.S. is vastly different without the prejudices of yesterday. An open mind is a good thing.
I am trying to figure out what she said that you object to?
Where is Mass, NH, CT, VT, NJ in this equation???
I think Texas needs an infusion of chicken wings.
One thing about her - when people start to distort what her meaning was she will publicly set them straight. Unlike the Republican males who lack intestinal fortitude, she has an abundant supply of it and knows when and how to unleash it.
Please do all the discouraging that you can muster up!
What is wrong with you??? Ever been to Pleasant Grove?? Go to a shelter and talk to some of these people. I can't believe what I'm reading on this thread.....FR is so much better than this. You and your ilk are centainly the minority.
Grow up
OY VAY. NOT what we need right now.
It's GW's fault that Barbara said this stuff!
I welcome any law abiding visitors.
New Orleans had a murder rate 10 times the national average...
You think all the bad people drowned? and only the good ones are in Houston?
Heck even the New Orleans Police were looting! What does that say to you about the morals of the average citizen?
what she said was OK???
WTF..she sounds like every bit the snobby country club republican..
a true conservative should be repulsed by her words.
sick.
Our church is running a shelter with about 120 evacuees, DFW area. Yesterday one man was overjoyed to find that his wife and children were in a Houston shelter, but he insisted they join him rather than traveling to meet them because "this place is like heaven. I've never been treated so good in all my life."
True story. (I'm sure his family was getting the same hospitality in Houston.)
Somebody will get their panties in a wad when I say this, but the silver lining in this very black cloud is that a degenerate and crime-ridden subculture has been disrupted and dispersed. With guidance and the right help, many of the evacuees may build better lives for both themselves and the next generation.
You're an optimist.
You think that's all that's showing up? I'd be wary, too if I thought only riff-raff were coming to the door, but if the authorities can sort through the evacuees & find the hard working people who just want a new chance at life...maybe Houston will benefit in the long run.
The same goes for those coming to Michigan. I just hope the our brilliant governor doesn't send them to Detroit or Flint...that would be like moving from Upper H*** to Lower H***, with freezing weather thrown as additional torture.
I've said the same on other threads. And as someone else pointed out, those that would try to raise themselves up are often pulled back down by their neighbors. This has cut the string for many of them. Has freed them from the neighborhood so to speak.
Howdy, and welcome to the Lone Star State!
Our shelter has 60 today. I reckon I've met most if not all of them. The ladies are helping with the cooking and cleaning. The men are helping store supplies, set up tables, etc. Perhaps we just got the cream of the crop....but I doubt it. I'm done with this thread. Seeing posts that so openly discriminate against the poor is disturbing.
Rats rear. This is a can do place full of can do people.
Amen. they attack everyone so it's old news.
I wish she had stopped after the first two quotes.
