I wonder if there was a union issue for not using the buses.

Nah, just stupidity by Blanco and Nagin and their cronies.

Add in all the city transit buses in the state, and the number soars ever higher.

The following should never have been necessary, but at least TX seems to show more ability to get things done than the NO Mayor and LA Governor:

Houston Chronicle ^ | Septmber 4, 2005 | Staff`
About 300 Houston Independent School District bus drivers and other employees spent Sunday on almost 150 district school buses rescuing hurricane victims from the waterlogged streets of New Orleans. HISD buses also transported military troops from an airfield to duty within flooded areas.

Fox interviewed some idiot actor or entertainer the other day (one of many). Among his silly statements he said that those were school busses for children and shouldn't be used to transport adults. That fit so well with his other remarks there were no questions about what he meant.

Yes, but you see those are school buses for little kids. They need regular buses for big folk! Something I heard from a spokeperson down yonder.

I read someplace the bus drivers in Orleans parish have as part of their contract an agreement that they not drive the buses for evacs.

I don't have confirmation of that.
