Tensions color Bush, Blanco meeting

Gov. Kathleen Blanco canceled a scheduled trip Monday to visit Louisiana evacuees in Houston shelters to stay in Baton Rouge to meet with President Bush. Blanco Communications Director Bob Mann said the governor did not learn about the Bush visit until early Monday morning. “We had no idea the president was coming,” Mann said.

Tension between the Blanco and Bush administrations has surfaced in recent days as state and federal officials try to coordinate recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The Blanco administration clearly wanted to express their irritation with the communication about the president's trip. Blanco officials said they had heard that the president might make a visit and had been trying to get details.

As of late Sunday night, FEMA officials told Blanco that the president was not planning a visit, Mann said. One key point of coordination is the military effort to restore order and begin rebuilding infrastructure.

As of Monday morning, the National Guard from Louisiana and other states had deployed 13,268 troops in the 13 parish area affected by the storm, Louisiana National Guard spokesman Pete Schneider said. In route are 7,845 more National Guardsmen, so that by Tuesday morning 21,113 guardsmen will be in Louisiana.

Parallel to that effort, the regular Army 82nd Airborne and 1st Cavalry divisions are sending in 7,000 troops to Louisiana to arrive in the next couple of days.

The liberal loons are liars...so typical of the left mantra...we don't won't her in Houston...let her stay in Louisiana...she's the one who let her people down to such a degree...she should be imprisoned...

"NOT ONCE did I see Blanco or Nagin addressing the country or the people of Louisiana."

Same here. I have been off work for a week due to local power issues related to the hurricane and have been flipping through every news channel. I still would not know who Blanco was if she walked up and slapped me.

Yeah! I've been wondering where they are? Where are their faces and voices in this time of crisis for their state? What's up with that?

"Blanco hired Witt." Precisely, and TDubb trying to stick him on MS's shoulders is why he should not be hanging out here in Freeperville.

Welcome to FR. You're the fifth or sixth newbie I've seen here in the last week with a really negative attitude.

Why don't you guyz get together and see if you can talk JimRob into creating a forum just for your ilk. You could call it "Bush Bashing 24/7."

I would like to know what the adjatant-general is doing. He is the actual commander of the LA National Guard. Blanco is a third wheel right now.

What SPECIFICALLY should FEMA have done?

And can you answer that without 20-20 hind sight?

C'mon now, list them out for us, don't just claim that they failed.

I was surprised at his statement that Haley hired Witt.
That didn't ring true, so I checked it out.

Congratulations on sniffing out the troll.
And, that is exactly what he is.

They can't seriously want a Katrina Commission. The facts about the timeline would set the Democrats in LA back twenty five years.
I don't want a "Katrina Commission." If anything, I want Congressional hearings chaired by Republicans. The 911 Comission was structured to second guess Bush and protect the "Clinton legacy." Republican-controlled hearings will do what you suggest - run down the timeline and humiliate the Democratic government of NO and LA.

OTOH on federalism grounds, it isn't the place of Congress to do that. So let's just drop the whole thing - it will be fought out in the next election. People will write books about it; Lousiana voters and NO voters will either read them, read the Internet and listen to talk radio - or listen to CNN and learn nothing at all.

I was just wondering, where is U.S. Rep. William Jefferson of New Orleans. I know he is currently under investigation, but this is his district and I have not seen him on TV, heard from him on the radio or seen one article in the paper that refferences him, let alone quote him.

His silence and the MSM silence about him is deafening.

Has anyone else noticed this?

This is about as ridiculous as FEMA Director Brown's statement that he didn't know people were at the Convention Center.

Agree 100%

Hmmmmm........

So, she expects to not declare the state in an emergency, she expects to block all federal efforts to get the job done all the while manipulating all efforts to cast blame on the feds for doing nothing - and, then that the President of the United States will call and tell her he is coming to visit her state?

No - don't think so. He represents the Federal Government and you, governor, represent the state - so make your own visit.

If she had been informed, she would have done something to dismiss his status and efforts. She is not needed as she has providen by her actions for the State of LA.

The Federal Government will handle this mess-up by the State of Florida since the State of Florida apparently can't even move buses to high ground before a hurricane, the state can not even make a decision that evacuation of their major city needs to be done and when told by the President of the United States TO evacuate those people, does not think to offer them ways out.

No, the state government is too busy pouring over the records to cover their prior inefficiency, and I am suspicious that possibly they would not have mourned the loss of the weaker in that city.

"Bush has his game face on....he's all about results"

exactly! And he will let them gobble up all the credit for the successful efforts too. This morning I saw the Mayor of NO saying "WE got xxx numbers of people out of NO yesterday. WE have made progress on fixing the breach in the levie"

With exception to the good local people, the Mayor of NO is trying to shove aside the work of the guard, the military & especially the army corps of engineers and pretend that HE is starting to get things done.

"There's no end to the good you can do, if you don't care who gets the credit" the creed of Ronald Reagan and now George W. Bush

"If President Bush says my little brother, the Lieutenant governor of Louisiana, didn't help Governor Blanco enough, I'll punch him square in the jaw, I swear to God. Literally."

Since it's impossible anymore to distinguish satire from truth when it comes to asinine remarks democrats make, please tell me if Landrieu really made the above comment.
