NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 4 - A day after two police suicides and the abrupt resignations or desertions of up to 200 police officers, defiant city officials on Sunday began offering five-day vacations - and even trips to Las Vegas - to the police, firefighters and city emergency workers and their families.

The idea of paid vacations was raised by both Mayor C. Ray Nagin and senior police officials who said that their forces were exhausted and traumatized and that the arrival of the National Guard had made way for the officers to be relieved.

"I'm very concerned about individuals who have been here, particularly since the first few days, and have been through a lot of hardship," Mr. Nagin said in an interview.

Even now this guy has no grasp on reality. Makes me think NO really was in a totally different world from the rest of us.

Can NO afford this? I understand about time off for rest but it's nothing our soldiers aren't going thru every day.

Considering what the cops and fire department guys went through in NY after 9-11...these guys in NO might ought to just shut up. You have to wonder just what kind of city NO really is, and what things need to be fixed after the water is pumped out. I'd start with the police department...and I might just put the mayor in line too.

I wouldn't be surprised if the money comes from diverted funds intended for the rescue effort in N.O.

Yeah, no kidding. The NOLA cops, it seems, are part of the criminal element.

Some anyway.

I've been told that 2/3rds didn't show up when the Mayor put out a belated all hands on deck.

The officials were planning to send 1,500 workers out in two shifts for five days each. They are sending them to Las Vegas because of the availability of hotel rooms and to Atlanta because many of them had relatives there.

New Orleans officials said they would remain in charge. Mr. Riley, who has been on the police force for 24 years, will oversee the police department in the superintendent's absence.

"We haven't turned over control of the city," Colonel Ebbert said.

They want to be in charge of their personnel without being responsible for their personnel, or doing any dirty work, but are willing to dole out five-day vacations to Las Vegas at taxpayer expense.

This was on earlier the reason Vegas was mentioned was the problems of Hotel space and needing to get them out of the city of not really to gamble but see doctors and keep them in one location. VEgas was mentioned because of the availabilty of hotels and coordination. The ones that remained are true heros and the two sucides were devastasting to them. He also is taking them off on cycles not all at once. The need for medical care is needed esp for the med problems we saw in the shelter today that the doctors think are already occuring because of the water. Again alot more to the article and the reason for the leave time for the officers than is being let on
