Nagin to Offer Free Trips to Las Vegas for N.O. Officers

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 4 - A day after two police suicides and the abrupt resignations or desertions of up to 200 police officers, defiant city officials on Sunday began offering five-day vacations - and even trips to Las Vegas - to the police, firefighters and city emergency workers and their families.

The idea of paid vacations was raised by both Mayor C. Ray Nagin and senior police officials who said that their forces were exhausted and traumatized and that the arrival of the National Guard had made way for the officers to be relieved.

"I'm very concerned about individuals who have been here, particularly since the first few days, and have been through a lot of hardship," Mr. Nagin said in an interview.

Exactly---no evidence of this.

In fact, I actually believe--but have no evidence just a gut feeling based on all the other ridiculous overstatements from folks like Nagen--that the number of dead in NO will be much lower than the 10s of thousands he is now spouting off. What will all the loonies say when it turns out to be less than one tenth of that. Now folks ares tarting to see what exaggerations we have had to deal with in Iraq, where we consistently were stunned that the news was reporting things entirely different than what we were seeing on the ground. Oh well.

Bribing them to do the jobs they were hired to do in the first place? The hits just keep on coming. I am getting sick and tired of this crap.

Don't you think a cash bonus would help them out more at a time like this?...

That's sort of along the line that I was thinking. Nagin ships these guys off (w/the families?) to Vegas for a little R & R...I mean, is that it?

Chances are most of these guys aren't going to have any money to gamble with; heck, some of them may not have any money at all -- literally! What are they supposed to do? Just wander around LV? Stand around watching people playing Blackjack? All in clothes they left NO in, probably the only clothes they have?

So, on their way to LV, is Nagin going to give them (NOPD, NOFD, et al.) allowances to buy themselves new clothes, as well as to pay for little "diversions"?

"...Mayor C. Ray Nagin and senior police officials who said that their forces were exhausted and traumatized..."

Yeah, walking through Walmart in your uniform, pushing a big shopping cart through the aisles, and helping yourself to items for free can really take a toll on a police officer can't it?

Maybe Nagin's supply lines have been rerouted through Vegas. Or maybe he thinks the Vegas mafia will protect him from the hitmen who are out to get him.

Nagin didn't even have the common decency to support the unscathed northern Mississippi casinos. He's such an idiot! But with great self-preservation skills, gotta hand him that. I think it's survival of the fittest between Nagin and Blanco. Which one will the democrats toss off the burning deck? My money's on Nagin, a photogenic, jive talking black man. And with the double bonus, if Blanco falls, Mary Landrieu's brother the Lt Gov., gets moved up the food chain early.

I've been told that 2/3rds didn't show up when the Mayor put out a belated all hands on deck.

According the the NOPD chief, a little over 400 out of a force of over 1600 are unaccounted for at this time.

So, you've never been there either? People keep telling me that NO is a culture unto itself. And to quit expecting the "officials" to act like officials.
