On Thursday I told my husband the death toll was going to be 15,000 to 20,000 from this storm. I haven't seen anything to make me think I need to revise the prediction downwards.

Contractors are now hiring armed security at about $1200 a wk. Travel, meals and lodging are included. The kicker: an 84 hour work week!

On the seventh day, the mayor of New Orleans said he would surrender control of his shattered, nearly abandoned city
Guess what Ray, you did this a week ago, only that time it was to the looters. There's no telling how many people died because aid was unable to get to them because thugs ruled the streets shooting at rescue workers. All so your idiot, scumbag constituents could break into jewelry stores and update their "bling". That'll be what's remembered from this episode. (NEWS FLASH - A Plasma T.V. is not a legitimate medical supply.)
You ought to be thrown in jail for this criminal negligence. You'll pay for this in hell one day.

I've put in my share of long weeks. I found a easy 40hr/wk Fed contract that pays more than that, and I don't need a tetanus booster or sleep on a cot.

"Contractors are now hiring armed security at about $1200 a wk." About 650 take home after local, state, and federal taxes, medicare, medicaid and what ever other government entitlements are taken out.

I predicted over 40,000 and I am considering increasing it to 50,000.

Medical examiners said they expected to have great difficulty identifying many of the victims. Many birth and dental records have been destroyed. My husband (a dentist) pointed this one out - very few dentists have gone to paperless offices where one could just grab a hard drive or a few backup CDs/DVDs and take them with them on evacuation. Anything below about, what, the third story, would be probably illegible except for the x-rays, which may not be labeled legibly. The rest would probably be looted.

Late Sunday, Mayor Ray Nagin told Knight Ridder that his entire police force would be pulled off the streets by Tuesday and all firefighters, paramedics and emergency dispatchers also were being sidelined. They will be sent to Baton Rouge for evaluation and counseling, he said.WTF? It's just now 6 days since initial word came of flooding. Yet National Guardsmen are expected to pack up at a moment's notice and devote unending days to this guy's city?? I would think cops in one of the cities with the highest crime and murder rate in the nation would be a little, ah... tougher?

Sadly to say I think you're still too low. The amount of devastation over this entire region and many people's attitude that it was just another hurricane that would either pass by them or wouldn't be too bad doesn't bode well.
And what is even more a shame is that the bodies will be beyond easy idendification. And I'm not sure with the numbers they are dealing with that it will be feasible to do dna (I might be wrong).
But, if I'm right, be prepared for those that will bring up the race card in comparing it to 9/11 when they sifted through all the debris to find bits and pieces of human remains.
God bless their souls.

Medical examiners said they expected to have great difficulty identifying many of the victims. Many birth and dental records have been destroyed.I think much of the identification will have to be done by family members placing missing family members names on a missing persons registry and submitting a DNA sample. DNA from bodies not readily identifiable would be tested and compared against samples. It's not a perfect system but it could at least identify a body as being from a particular family.

You ought to be thrown in jail for this criminal negligence. You'll pay for this in hell one day. Why do you think the Christians are instructed to pray for those in authority?
Because you don't want leaders making decisions like this.
Prayers for ALL!
