SAN DIEGO, CA -(9-4-05) A San Diego man is helping victims of Hurricane Katrina in a big way. David Perez has reportedly chartered a jet and is flying medical supplies into the Gulf then returning to San Diego with refugees. A plane with 172 refugees is expected in San Diego Sunday. UPDATE: The plane arrived Sunday around 5pm. Officials from the City of San Diego along with the local Red Cross set up a refugee center at Kearny High School. We were told that the plane would hold 172 people. The exact number of people on Sunday's flight was not immediately available. According to a spokesperson for Executive Jet Services, three more planes were scheduled to go to Louisiana carrying supplies Sunday evening, then returning with more refugees.

I believe that there is an opportunity here to break the cycle of poverty and dependence for some of these people, though it may well be passed up. Getting them out of their old neighborhoods, in small groups, away from their old patterns of life, and showing them how to succeed might make new lives for them. The key is to break the mentality of failure. You have to expect them to do better, and put pressure on them to do so. Will it be done? That's the question.

I predict a rebuilt New Orleans would probably be filled mostly with illegal immigrants.

That is my prediction too. Instead of jazz on Bourbon St. we will hear cantina music. Instead of Mardi Gras we will have Cinco De Mayo or some such. Tacos and burritos instead of gumbo and jambalaya. Atzalan has moved one state further east.

How San Diegans Can Help Hurricane Victims
Local Organizations Are Ready To Accept Donations

SAN DIEGO -- 10News will have a flat-bed trailer truck at the station on Tuesday. People are being urged to donate in-kind items, like water, canned food, blankets, diapers, baby formula, etc., for San Diego Airlift and the hurricane victims.

People can drop-off supplies beginning at 11:00 a.m., and continuing through 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. For directions to the 10News Studios, click on Directions.

10News will air a special report, San Diego Airlift, Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The program will look back on the entire trip to Louisiana to rescue storm victims and their arrival here in San Diego.

10News will have a phone bank open from 5:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night to accept offers of help and donations.

The people at Executive Jet Services are working to get aid to people traumatized by Hurricane Katrina. Anyone who can donate goods, services or time is asked to call 1-877-247-2648 during regular business hours.

There is a critical need for duffel bags, baby formula, diapers, wipes, non-perishable foods, hygiene products, underwear (adult and children's sizes), bras and cots. These items, as well as any other supplies, can be dropped off at two different locations: 11445 Tierrasanta Blvd. or at Jim's Air, 2904 Pacific Highway.

The American Red Cross is urging people to donate money, rather than goods or services, to their organization at this time. Monetary donations to the Red Cross can be made by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW or onling at American Red Cross.

People interested in donating clothing, food, supplies, toys or other items should contact the Salvation Army, Goodwill or their local Wal-Mart store, reported 10News.
