U.S. commercial air carriers continue transporting tens of thousands of evacuees from the New Orleans airport to destinations throughout the nation.

Rooftop air rescue efforts continue. One rescue chopper crashed late today. Crew members are reported safe. Gunmen who fired upon bridge repair contractors were killed by law enforcement.

To date, an estimated 70 countries and U.S. businesses have pledged hundreds of millions of dollars, supplies, food and equipment to assist the United States' efforts in Katrina's aftermath. Lt. General Honore described the damage to Mississippi today, "all infrastructure south of Jackson, MS is either damaged or destroyed." Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice visited the devastated areas, and attended Sunday church services in Mobile, Alabama.

Elsewhere, Sean Penn's rescue boat, sans plug and full of his personal entourage, reportedly sank during launch in New Orleans. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) threatened to punch President Bush, and Jefferson Parish President Broussard decried that the bureaucracy of FEMA has committed murder.

Streaming Video:

All information is subject to change. Many stations are relying on their corporate parents to configure and maintain Internet streaming. Because of the intense interest in the feeds, they may be unavailable at times because of network congestion or a problem feeding the video to the streaming servers.

WWL-TV New Orleans - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity. They have a secondary stream from Yahoo. WWL-TV is also offering a special low-bandwidth audio-only stream for dial-up users.

WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

WFAA-TV Dallas, TX - WFAA-TV is here because Dallas is one of the evacuation cities.

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM (Clear Channel & Entercom) who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Gulf Coast Storm Network (Clear Channel Radio) - Clear Channel offers radio listeners across the gulf coast access to a simulcast emergency radio service. This service seems primarily focused on Alabama and Mississippi, but does cover Louisiana to some degree.

‘Theater Immersion Training’ New Watchword for First U.S. Army

Lt. Gen. Russell L. Honoré, Commanding General First U.S. Army, addresses leaders at the First U.S. Army Commander’s Conference

“We are in a war with no rear areas or front lines. We have to instill the Warrior Ethos into the mobilized Soldiers we train. Every Soldier must be able to function as an Infantryman. Soldiers must have tough, realistic, hands-on, repetitive training until their response is intuitive.”

That is the vision that Lt. Gen. Russell L. Honoré, Commanding General First U.S. Army, shared with leaders at the First U.S. Army Commander’s Conference in Atlanta . He aims to accomplish this with what he calls “theater immersion” training. “When Soldiers get off the bus at the mob (mobilization) station, they must feel they have arrived in Iraq or Afghanistan ,” Honoré said.

Instead of living in a normal garrison environment, Soldiers will see concertina wire, entry control points, and guard towers to simulate the Forward Operating Base (FOB) environment. “In an FOB, small unit leaders not only train on theater-specific tasks,” said Honoré, “they have an opportunity to exercise their troop-leading procedures and basic discipline on a continuous basis.”

Since time is limited at the mobilization station, immediately immersing Soldiers into a replicated combat zone enables focused training 24-hours a day, and retraining can take place as needed.

“We can repeatedly train Soldiers on multiple tasks. For example, a single simulated mortar attack trains react to indirect fire, casualty evacuation procedures and 9-line MEDEVAC, damage assessment, counter-battery fire and many other procedures they might never get the chance to practice more than once,” said Col. Christian de Graf, commander, 2/87th Division (Training Support).

“In Iraq , a mortar or an IED can hit at anytime – not just during scheduled training periods. We can train the Soldiers the way they will fight and the theater immersion concept allows us to do that,” said Col. Daniel Zajac, commander, 3rd/87th Division (Training Support). “The standard for how we train Soldiers comes from the theater. We are constantly adjusting our training based on current operations in theater. The theater immersion concept provides the flexibility to do that real time,” said Zajac.

“Theater Immersion is a dynamic training approach that gives us greater flexibility to train Soldiers. With theater immersion we can create more events, longer events, ramp up the volume or turn it down based on the training needs of Soldiers and units,” said Col. Al Jones, First U.S. Army Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. “Our goal is that Soldiers respond to threats intuitively, regardless of the situation in which they might find themselves.”

“We have a non-negotiable contract with the American people to prepare her sons and daughters for war,” Honoré said. “We must use imagination and innovation to do this better than we ever have before. We can not, we will not fail in this task.

It doesn't look like he tried to land - no dimples in the dirt where the wheels would have dug in - and besides, there is no reason to land there (except if the aircraft decides to. :-P ).

I also listened to Jackson ranting that the residents of New Orleans should be kept in the state.

I heard Wesley Clarke on FNC saying the very same thing earlier today. Just like you said: the Dems are already worried about losing control of the state if all of their voters are dispersed around the country.

re Vitters and Jindal

I suppose only limp light blue republicans can win in such a seriously blue state as LA - much like our R senators from New England states.

Dear, 'racists' was a pun, a play on words re race car drivers; ya know, 'humor' - what humans often resort to at tragic times to keep from going insane; meant to cause smiles; you may have heard of it ?

nevermind...

The most touching picture that I have seen yet of the President was at the shelter. A couple of ladies were resting on a bed and they looked like death warmed over. The President just got on the bed with them and really tried to comfort them.

I get so angry when the press and liberal try to make G. Bush out to be some kind of uncaring monster.
