WASHINGTON -- Chief Justice William Rehnquist's body will lie in repose in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court on Tuesday and Wednesday and he will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery following funeral services Wednesday.
The court announced Sunday that the public will be invited to pay its respects from 10:30 a.m. EDT until 10 p.m. on Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until noon on Wednesday.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew's Cathedral in Washington, D.C., with funeral services open to friends and family. The burial at Arlington will be private.
In a sensitive ritual, Supreme Court officials and the Military District of Washington coordinated the funeral arrangements with Rehnquist's family.
Timing and other details were in the hands of the family, said Barbara Owens, a spokeswoman for the Army's Joint Force Headquarters National Capitol Region/Military District of Washington.

Let's reserve this thread for honoring the life and legacy of the late Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, William Rehnquist; and let's leave debate about the future of the SCOTUS to other threads. Thank you.

St. Matthew's Cathedral is one of the most impressive houses of worship in the United States. The red brick church, designed by C. Grant La Farge in 1893, has eclectic features inspired by Italian churches. The simplicity of the exterior contrasts with the rich decorations of the interior. Its imposing copper ribbed dome is one of the visual focal points of the Washington skyline. The Roman Catholic parish of St. Matthew's was established in 1839 to relieve the overcrowding at St. Patrick's Church. On July 22, 1939, Pope Pius XII announced that the archdiocese of Washington was established and that St. Matthew's was its cathedral. In 1947 Washington was made an independent archdiocese, and St. Matthew's continues as a cathedral. The cathedral has been the site of a number of important services, most notably the funeral of President John F. Kennedy on November 25, 1963. Today a memorial marks the location of Kennedy's casket during the service. Pope John Paul II celebrated mass at St. Matthew's in 1979. St. Matthew's Cathedral is located at 1735 Rhode Island Ave., NW. It is open to the public for services. For more information call 202/347-3215. Metro stop: Farragut North

That's nice. I was curious about St. Matthew's as they mentioned it.

Rehnquist was a great American. His voice was so calm and soothing. He kept his cool wonderfully in his 1986 confirmation hearing, when the likes of Sen. Kennedy tried to smear him. Rehnquist honorably dissented from some horrible Supreme Court decisions (Roe, Romer, Lawrence, and many of the extreme anti-Christian cases). God rest his soul.

My favorite quote from him
On seperation of Church and State
It is impossible to build sound Constitutional doctrine
on a mistaken understanding of Constitutional history...
The establishment clause had been expressely freighted with
Jeffersons misleading metaphor for nearly forty years...
There is simply no historical foundation for the proposition
that the framers intended to build a wall of seperation
[between church and state]...
The recent court decisions are in no way based on either
the language or the intent of the framers.

God bless William Rehnquist, the late Chief Justice of the SCOTUS and in his younger days a Sgt. in the US Army Air Corps. A damn fine American.

So very sorry to lose this man. We may not see another like him on the court. May God rest his soul, and comfort his family. What a terrible loss for freedom and the constitution.

"I have difficulty in concluding, as the Court does, that the right of "privacy" is involved in this case. Texas, by the statute here challenged, bars the performance of a medical abortion by a licensed physician on a plaintiff such as Roe. A transaction resulting in an operation such as this is not 'private' in the ordinary usage of that word. Nor is the 'privacy' that the Court finds here even a distant relative of the freedom from searches and seizures protected by the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, which the Court has referred to as embodying a right to privacy
To reach its result the Court necessarily has had to find within the scope of the Fourteenth Amendment a right that was apparently completely unknown to the drafters of the Amendment." Justice William Rehnquist from his dissent in Roe.

Was William Rehnquist a Roman Catholic? If not, how is it that his funeral Mass is being performed there? Please no flames. I'm a Catholic myself and have always been under the impression that non-Catholics couldn't have that honor accorded them. Any answers? Thanks in advance.

As far as a new Chief Justice. Well I can tell you it wont be Al Derschowitz.
I suspect he moves Scalia to Chief Justice. Then appoints a solid conservative. There are a number of them out there. Might be intresting if he chose Janice Rogers Brown and can't think of her name. She wears wire frame glasses is in her fifties and a solid conservative. She has been mentioned and i am having a senior moment.
