This was posted on one of my favorite blogs. I'm hoping there are some FREEPERs near Covington, LA who can round up some food and help these Sisters.
Dear Brothers, Sisters and Friends of Covington Carmel
Little Rocks Sister Camilla received the following this morning from Sister Edith of Covington:
Sister Edith of Covington Carmel called at 5:15am on a borrowed cell phone that was getting through. She wanted us to know how they were doing. The Carmelite friars left for Marylake last night (Wed.). The Benedictine Abbey near by asked the Nuns to take in some of their overflow refugees, especially one of the sick Fathers. The Sisters themselves are sleeping in cupboards to accommodate the guests. The big problem they are facing now is food since nothing can be bought. If anyone is heading down in their direction, please load up some food for them. Highway 55 through Jackson MS is open and get onto I-12 at Hammond which will take you into Covington, but take the exit from I-12 at Covington Point. Its a small subdivision just below the Carmel. Both ends of River Road are blocked. The whole situation is horrendous. Gangs with heavy guns stop the medical trucks with supplies and took all the drugs. You cannot imagine what its like.
Here in Arkansas hotels and many places have taken in refugees from LA and MS. Marylake and our Carmel have offered our places for Jackson Carmel, should they need to evacuate. Our law enforcement agencies and disaster relief vehicles have left to help LA and MS.
We will keep you updated on any further information we get. Prayers are still needed for these poor people and situations.
It sounds like we have some friends in trouble here.
Sounds like we need Nuns with Guns. (Only kidding>)
what the heck is going on in Arkansas?!!!
those poor nuns. I hope God sends them some protection besides the angels...or at least some armed 'angels" to keep them safe.
got that wrong....they are in LA.
?
Ping!
Wow! Is there anything that distant Freepers can do, I wonder?
There have to be some Catholic freepers in surrounding states who could respond quickly.
Also, Catholic Charities is taking donations. You'd think they could help.
That's what I'm hoping. I don't even know if I posted this properly b/c I don't see it on the Freeper mainpage. I've never posted here before. Prayers please. I'm in DC and not close enough.
Are you sure they are having these issues? Has the nun who made the call on the borrowed cell phone call the state troopers or st. tammany parish sheriff's office? The Knights of Columbus run a camp on the grounds, so I would be surprised no one has helped them. I phone someone after reading your post and will have them, if they can travel, go over there or send help.
hope this is not a bullshoot post.
Catholic Charities may not know the situation.
Tiny nuns.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
I went to Catholic Charities USA Tuesday afternoon to ask if there was anything to do, answer phones, do office work?
They were "still assessing."
Rinequx:
I trust the blog I pulled it from. I can't be certain but I'd rather be wrong then have these people not get what they need.
As I said, I phoned a friend who is about 35 minutes from there. He will let me know if someone is closer or if he can drive there. I have to tell you, they should be well stocked with food. I have been there a few times, yet it was several years ago.
If I hear back from my friend, I'll let you know. Thanks.
Thank you. You are so kind.
You are so kind.
No Im not, it's just a great place to hear mass. The monks singing inside the Abby is unbelievable. The place is worth saving.
I just cant believe no police/sheriff office has been over there.
Maybe they mean "closets" or "pantries"? Sounds like someone is not a native speaker of American!
