New Orleans PD shot contractors - not thugs - on bridge
Mod point of clarification: The first 100 or so replies below were posted in reaction to reports that the contractors had been fatally shot.
Mod Update
The Associated Press
Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on a group of contractors traveling across a bridge on their way to make repairs, authorities said.
Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people carrying guns, killing five or six.
Fourteen contractors were traveling across the Danziger Bridge under police escort when they came under fire, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers.
They were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help plug the breech in the 17th Street Canal, Hall said.
None of the contractors was killed, Hall said.
The bridge spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.
No other details were immediately available.

BTW, I have to commend those of the NOPD who haven't quit. The ones who are staying must have a strong sense of duty and love for their city. Me too. If you follow "the interdictor" blog, you get a sense about just how good the law enforcement is. I think they have shown incredible bravery under extraordinary circumstances.
Sounds like the whole operation is well organized at this point, armed escort, etc. for workers. Too bad that much overhead is required due to thugs, but so goes the war. Hopefully the thug population is seriously thinned in the coming days.

Not sure, but I think I saw Kerry windsurfing in the easternmost parish of New Orleans. I guess it was a photo op to show that he's connected with what's going on down there. He had on quite a slick little surfing outfit, I think it was the Laird Hamilton model.

I still have yet to hear any official condemn the action of the NOPD, when clearly they have some REAL problems within their ranks. Glad it wasn't the contractors though...at least they didn't botch it like they did the looting problem.

"Again, where is Kerry and his Brand of Brothers? Their unique boating skills could sure be put to use here, right?"
We could use Teddy's expert underwater rescue skills at this time too.

Nevermind that you sit there calling long time members of this forum "a-holes".A lot of people I saw posting on that thread were total a-holes, whether they've been here longer than me or not. I don't recall what you were saying, but upon hearing that six people were dead by police action (and nothing more than that) a bunch here were already breaking out the champagne. Crazy.

The water is presently at the same height on both sides of the levees. At present, the River is within its banks - it's the Lake to the north that has flooded NO. It's my understanding NO south of the River is mostly dry.

Jackson just used "global warming", "the ozone layer", and the "war in Iraq" in the same sentence. Absolutely amazing!!!

"IF IF IF this is true and the bad guys were shooting at the contractors and were taken out, anyone that now doesn't believe urban warfare is breaking out is seriously misinformed..IMHO"Urban warfare started on Wednesday, after the looters got enough booze and drugs into them to get really intellectually elite and start shooting the people trying to rescue them. The media is so agenda driven they don't bother to report stuff like that because it'd ruin the "Bush should resign" routine they're working up to. How many people know the NO police and the NG have suffered some casualties from the "survivors"? Show of hands?

Can't believe I'm saying this but I caught the last part of a new conference of Jackson and he was surprisingly very calm. I didn't hear him bashing Bush and instead just expressing frustration at supplies we haven't accepted through FEMA... I echo that frustration. Help that couldn't be accepted cause there was no plan in place - it that's the truth then it's something that needs to be fixed, that's for sure... I thought I heard him saying not to be too upset at the amount of time things took (maybe it was my own mind overwriting his insanity! LOL)
Anyway, I wish they would get the story straight about who was shot. Really bad reporting - I wonder if we'll ever get a straight story. The guy or gal at the AP on this story is not doing well...
To: Echo Talon
No! No! Disband the police AND the military and let the lefty liberals handle it. When they've finsihed, got it all straight and perfect, they can fight our wars for us and straighten everything out, meanwhile I'll pack my bags.

Maybe they meant to not say "contractors were killed," but that it was a "contract killing." The new drug turf is probably just sorting itself out down in New Orleans, and the battle for neighborhoods, etc is underway. When it's all said and done, I'll bet there will be more of this kind of violence.
