New Orleans PD shot contractors - not thugs - on bridge
Mod point of clarification: The first 100 or so replies below were posted in reaction to reports that the contractors had been fatally shot.
Mod Update
The Associated Press
Police shot and killed at least five people Sunday after gunmen opened fire on a group of contractors traveling across a bridge on their way to make repairs, authorities said.
Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people carrying guns, killing five or six.
Fourteen contractors were traveling across the Danziger Bridge under police escort when they came under fire, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers.
They were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to help plug the breech in the 17th Street Canal, Hall said.
None of the contractors was killed, Hall said.
The bridge spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.
No other details were immediately available.

"Given the circumstances, carrying a gun on the bridge in NO is an act of provocation, and makes you an immediate suspect to those rightfully assigned to restore law and order"I dunno, I left for ten minutes and when I came back it was pulled. Troll overdose, probably. They may migrate here.

I'd blame FNC for this (and whomever else went to air w/the lead before waiting). The wires are dynamic. Often there are several corrected versions of any hot story within minutes. They look like the same story, but details keep getting corrected/changed. Sometimes it takes 20 minutes to get the real facts.
These folks are all just hair-trigger set to be the very first to break something.
The original report just was horribly depressing. I am glad it was wrong.

Whoever transmitted the original message to AP messed up. Probably crawling under a rock right now hoping no one notices.

I think the mods pulled it because the title (in which the victims were called "thugs") and the ensuing comments made a lot of Freepers look like total a-holes,It looks like this "a-hole" was right.

Your gut, was bang-on right. That'll change if this new revised version of the story we're getting (that police shot ONE person attacking contractors) turns out to be the real one.
To: prairiebreeze
the lamestream media is going to get innocent people killed before this is all over. Sadly it's not the first time & it won't be the last!

Are you kidding? Can you spell Global Warming? Those guns were too hot because of global warming and they went off accidently, causing innocent people who were only feeding their family to be shot by Bush's de facto police state. Is it worth all this for tax cuts for the rich?
(is this needed? /sarcasm)
