"When he arrived at the Astrodome about 10 p.m. Wednesday, 20-year-old Jabbar Gibson modestly confessed that he had commandeered a school bus in New Orleans, then picked up about 70 passengers before heading out for the 13-hour trek to Houston."

so will the city of New Orleans DEMAND the Federal Government PAY for their flooded buses?
Whay is the dollar amount of this mayor's incompetence.
Those water logged buses are now Democrat Paperweights.
To: joinedafterattack
This guy should be given a battlefield promotion and sent back to N.O. to do the job that that idiot mayor cannot do.

I missed the interview. I wonder if anybody has it on the Internet. I bet it would be a keeper.

Oh, I don't doubt that Mayor Nagin would love to charge him with grand theft auto, operating an unlicensed jitney service, operating a passenger conveyance without a commercial drivers' license, etc, etc.

Link to article in Monroe, LA paper about 100's of school buses from across the state, getting to within 10 miles of downtown NOLA, 60 HOURS before landfall and the city/state govt would not allow them in - would not give them an assignment to evacuate - in some cases would not even acknowledge their presence..
Buses were in Kenner, LA by 600pm FRIDAY - Aug 26th. After a week of sitting at a truck stop with other EMS crews / ambulance teams and rescue personnel - the Ouachita Parish School Supt called his people home..
SICKENING

Put the people in the bus on the jury.
As the late Johnny Cochran would say
If the passengers live you must forgive.

I need to start writing them all down, that poor girl never gets it right.

Originally, it was reported that Gibson hot-wired the bus. After I saw the interview, I learned that the bus depot was open, key box available to anyone who took the initiative. The folks who wait on government to solve their problems can't complain for their own lack of action. There was an interview with a passenger (a white guy) from the bus who called the man a hero....a true hero indeed.

"If anyone wants to take the lead and put a scholarship together for this kid to go to bus driver's school to get his Commercial Driver's License (assuming he doesn't already have one or a better profession), please count me in for a donation."He'd never driven a bus before!

I love that young man. Greta asked him if he still talked to the people that he drove to the Astro...and he said "yes." Greta asked him what he says to them, and he replied "I tell them I love them."
And concerning that last picture that you posted, joinedafterattack, one poster defended the mayor's "plan" to use the city buses to evacuate the citizenry out of New Orleans before Katrina hit, saying the following to another poster who questioned it:
"You are wrong. They used city buses." And a little later insisted: "There were buses picking up people all over the city."

If we can figure out where to send it, I am ready to send a check to this young man to show him how proud we Americans are of him.
To be used for his family, education, whatever is needed.
