Kuwait Pledges $500M for Hurricane Relief Updated: Sunday, Sep. 4, 2005 - 11:26 AM
KUWAIT CITY (AP) - The oil-rich Persian Gulf state of Kuwait said Sunday it will donate $500 million in aid to U.S. relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina.
The offer is the largest known put forward since the hurricane ravaged Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and follows a $100 million aid donation from the emir of a Mideast neighbor, Qatar.
Kuwait's energy minister said his country would provide "oil products that the disaster-stricken states need in addition to other humanitarian aid."
"It's our duty as Kuwaitis to stand by our friends to lighten the humanitarian misery and as a payback for the many situations during which Washington helped us through the significant relations between the two friendly countries," Sheik Ahmed Fahd Al Ahmed Al Sabah said in a statement carried by Kuwait's official news agency, KUNA.
Kuwait is one of America's closest Mideast allies and owes its 1991 liberation from Iraqi occupation forces to a U.S.-led coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's army out.
Kuwait and Qatar's donations came as the Egypt-based 22-member Arab League called on Arab nations to provide relief to the U.S.
The Arab League said that its secretary-general, Amr Moussa, sent a cable of "deep condolences and regret to the U.S. administration over the effect of Hurricane Katrina ... and called on all Arab countries to extend aid to the United States to face the exceptional humane circumstances."
Great news! Thanks Kuwait!
very good.
I hope they wire it today.
Wow- and I thought the $100 million from Qatar was a biggie...
A kind and appreciated gesture.
Now we're talkin'........... Thanks, Kuwait.
Thank you, Kuwait!
It's a lot of loot ya'know?
And in other news, wealthy Saudi princes donate tens of millions to Al Qaeda, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, etc.
Thank you, Kuwait!
Yeah, but I wonder where it's going...
I doubt they would send it to the Salvation Army or Red Cross, being that these aren't Mohammedan organizations.
Will the cash go to Mohammedan/Wahhabist "relief" agencies?
Will CAIR type org. now involve itself in the Katrina operations?
Just like the money from Qatar, I would watch where it goes, because they have an agenda.
Oil rebate. Nice.
For all you Wal Mart bashers out there, Wal Mart gave 17 million dollars, not counting what was looted out of their New Orleans stores.
This should also forever end the question over whether the Kuwaitis are grateful for the liberation of their country in the First Gulf War.
Kuwait may be rich, but they're a tiny country. This is a significant donation for them (including the oil!),
Kuwait and Qater have stepped up to the plate.
Kuwait has good reason. So would France, Germany, Poland, England, Italy... the list goes on.
Wow, thanks Kuwait!
Wow. Qatar donated 100M and now this. Excellent!
The Kuwaitis will probably give it straight to the Red Cross (remember, they have their sister organization, the Red Crescent, in the ME) or straight to Washington. Remember, the Kuwaitis are *far* more secular than the Saudis. I don't believe that there were any Kuwaitis among the Sept 11 attack crews and it is extremely, extremely rare to find a Kuwaiti in a terrorist organization. They don't even like the Palestinians.
Take a look at how Kuwait distributes the oil wealth, and you'll see why they have generated no terrorists.
