The book is an examination of the disputed 1876 U.S. presidential election between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel Tilden. The Chief Justice explores how Congress found a way to resolve the national impasse by creating a bipartisan electoral commission comprised of members of the U.S. House, Senate, and Supreme Court to decide who would become the nineteenth President of the United States.
Author Bio: William Rehnquist has been the Chief Justice of the United States since 1986. Prior to his nomination as Chief Justice by President Ronald Reagan, he served as an Associate Justice on the Court for Fifteen Years. He has previously served as an assistant attorney general at the Justice Department during the Nixon administration. He is the author of several other books on Supreme Court history.
