House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert began his day yesterday explaining that he really does not want to see New Orleans bulldozed, and he ended it defending his absence from the Capitol when Congress approved a $10.5 billion hurricane aid package. In between, a former president hinted he would like to throttle the Illinois Republican.
Hastert was still reeling from reaction to his comments earlier this week about the storm-ravaged city. "It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed," he said in an interview with the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights, Ill. Asked whether it made sense to spend billions of dollars rebuilding a city that lies below sea level, he told the paper, "I don't know. That doesn't make sense to me."
In Syracuse, N.Y., former president Bill Clinton was discussing New Orleans's dilemma when someone described the speaker's comments. Had they been in the same place when the remarks were made, Clinton said, "I'm afraid I would have assaulted him."

X42 sure talks a good game, doesn't he?
Hastert is correct. This city should not be rebuilt , at least not where it sits.
If you absolutely must rebuild it where it is, at least use your own money and not mine.
"Clinton says he would have attacked him"
Since Clinton was the 1'st black president, would that be a reverse hate crime against whitey?
--"I'm afraid I would have assaulted him."--
You'd have to zip up your pants first, bill.
Unfortunately we need a major port somewhere in that area. I don't know if there is any dry land between New Orleans and Baton Rouge that would be suitable. For less money than rebuilding and protecting New Orleans, maybe they could dig a canal from the lower Mississippi to the Pearl River...or dig a moat along the US/Mexico border and transport the excavated soil to New Orleans to raise the city above sea level.
What did he say that was wrong?
Nothing that I saw - the only problem in the entire story was CLINTON!
So typical of the Bully. Didn't he assault Juanita Broderick as well?
Whatever moron.
My first thought.
Hastert simply raised the question that needed to be asked. He did the dirty job nobody else wanted to do, and it will serve its purpose.
Now is the time to address the issue because already the push is on by politicians & the media to popularize the presumption that the city will be rebuilt whereis, below sea level. We should make clear NOW that those of us that will get stuck paying the bill for rebuilding do not want the city rebuilt where it sat below sea level.
To refrain from saying 'it should not' allows the presumption that 'it will be' to be established & reinforced.
LOL. You're right -- check out my reply at the top of the thread!
OMG! I never saw it, lol. You know what they say, great minds...
Seems to me that these people have no place to go like relatives or friends or whatever. I would think they would just assimilate into society just like a million illegals do every year. They can still collect welfare wherever they are.
"I'm afraid I would have assaulted him."
HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA. I Love a good joke!
Are you offended that he said NO should be moved.
He is correct it should be, they have been doing that on the Mississippi for years.
Maybe all that coastal develop on the Gulf should be moved back.
Seems to me we are spending a lot of money on stupid people?
Billy Boy can only assault women. He stays away from men. And that's a good thing. He would probably have to put some ice on his fat head.
I didn't know Bill raped men too... he is gay... wow.
Well, at least there's one great mind between us. LOL!
