With so many reports and stories over race and demographics in New Orleans, a demographic snapshot is in order to inject some facts into the discussions.
Ineach of the three data points below, the first figure is New Orleans, the second figure is Louisiana, the third figure is the USA average.

The female to male ratio is higher in NO than both the Louisiana Average and the USA average. (Notice all the single moms in the photos).

The percapita income for Asians is substantially lower ($13,826) than for the average Asian in the USA ($21,823).
Marital Status:
Wow! The percentage of males who never married in N.O is 43.7 % versus the USA percentage of 30.3%.
Females it is 38.6% versus USA average of 24.1%--they just don't get married much in New Orleans. A high percentage of people on welfare correlates with this fact.
Transportation to Work by Public Transportation:
13.7% for New Orleans versus the USA average of 4.7%.

How do these numbers add up? The town's population is 1/2 Million. There are 20-30 K evacuees and 10K or so dead? (I think that's the number I heard on the way home.) That means 10% of the town stuck around for the wind.

you're right, i was just thinking that with gov't and colleges it would be higher...
I checked and Boston (University/Big. Govt. city) is at 15% with the Nat'l Avg. around 9%, so 10% really isn't that outta wack...
however, I have a strong hunch that the 10% population with advanced degrees tend to live...in the suburbs....
Yes sir you are 100% correct in your synopsis. But what is truly more evil than that? Reversed racism.
This is being portrayed as a race issue and class issue not only in many places in this country, but around the world.
All the white, rich people got out and the poor, minorities were left to die. That is how this is viewed by many.
If New Orleans is 70% black, then an overwhelming majority of the victims are going to be black by default, unless some kind of bizzare reverse exit from the city had occurred where most of the whites stayed behind.
The data just provides a richness and depth to anyone who cares to use it in butressing their position that this was not a disaster of race and class, but a disaster of mismanagement and prevailing culture.
Nothing reduces Liberals to sputtering, name calling rage than to be confronted with facts.

What the H311 is this "slow response" crap?
1. Katrina was a Cat 5 Hurricane.
2. Katrina trashed transportation and power for 200 Miles North of the coast and 110 miles East of New Orleans.
WHERE do you supose that relief supplies and personnel should have been pre-positioned? After you explain that, then explain HOW they were supposed to respond any faster than they did considering EVERY road was clogged with debris. AND there was ONLY one road into and out of New Orleans.
The response to this disaster is only "slow" because of:
1. the sheer havoc wreaked by this storm and
2. TOO DAMN many people DIDN'T evacuate New Orleans!
I wouldn't make a claim like that unless I had statistics to back it up. The blacks I met in college were, for the most part, trying to do whatever they wanted to major in, and were not gravitating towards those fields you mentioned.
And , of course, one need only read the work of someone like Thomas Sowell to realize blacks can be well represented in any field.
However, the stuff like African Studies and such are, as you imply, a complete and total scam. Disgraceful to call those areas "disciplines".

Because the vast majority of those who didn't evacuate have lived their entire lives on government hand outs and "help me ups". If someone else didn't provide it, then they didn't have it.
The real question IMO is WHOSE fault is that?

most of the black students here break down basically the same as the whites....
lots of business majors, then education, health related fields, etc.
of course there are black guys who study African Studies and then wind up earning 20,000 a year.
kinda like the white gals who take womens studies and end up earning 20,000 a year.
or the chubby white guys who get a Ph.D. in American history and end up earning whatever McDonalds will pay me....hehe, sorry
the point is, most of the black guys i know on campus are either in my dept. or in the big 3 here, Business, Education, Health...with some in Ag Sciences.
Then look up "demographics." Age, gender, location, religion, race, etc. are part of demographics' studies.
Does this mean that almost half of NO population are receiving financial assistance from the government? This is sick. Does anybody have these figures. A lot of welfare programs now couched under the term of "grants". Some blacks have clearly stated they vote democratic because the dems give more "goodies" to them.
