With so many reports and stories over race and demographics in New Orleans, a demographic snapshot is in order to inject some facts into the discussions.
Ineach of the three data points below, the first figure is New Orleans, the second figure is Louisiana, the third figure is the USA average.
GENDER
Pct New Orleans ... Pct Louisanna ... Pct USA
Male 46.9 48.4 49.1
Female 53.1 51.6 50.9
The female to male ratio is higher in NO than both the Louisiana Average and the USA average. (Notice all the single moms in the photos).
AGE 15 or younger
Pct N.O. ... Pct LA ... Pct USA
22.2 22.4 21.4
Age 16-24
15.9 15.5 13.9
Contrary to what many may think after watching the images, NO is actually younger as a city than the national average age.
Age 65 +
Pct N.O.... Pct LA ... Pct USA
11.7 11.6 12.4
Again, fewer old people than national average.
RACE AND ETHNICITY
Pct N.O... Pct LA ... Pct USA
Whites 28.1 63.9 75.1
Black or African American
67.3 32.5 12.3
American Indian and Alaska native

Asian 2.3 1.2 3.6
The 2.3% of Asians in N.O. is roughly 11,000 people in the city proper.
Hispanic or Latino
3.1 2.4 12.5
There are roughly 15,000 Hispanic/Latins in N.O.
Some other race
0.9 0.7 5.5
Education:
Boy, what a surprise here. Check this out:
Bachelor's Degree
Pct N.O ... Pct LA ... Pct USA
15.0 12.2 15.5
Masters, Professional or Doctorate Degree
10.7 6.5 8.9
That's right! N.O has a HIGHER percentage than the national average. Considerign the images shown, this will surprise many.
Median Household Income
Pct N.O. ... Pct LA ... Pct USA
$27,133 $32,566 $41,994
New Orleans is a VERY poor city compared to USA average.
However, .......
Per capita Income Whites
Pct N.O Pct LA Pct USA
$31,971 $20,488 $23,918
The whites in New Orleans have a higher per capita income than the USA average for whites.
Per capita income blacks:
$11,332 $10,166 $14,437
The blacks have a LOWER percapita income than the blacks' average across the USA.
The percapita income for Asians is substantially lower ($13,826) than for the average Asian in the USA ($21,823).
Marital Status:
Wow! The percentage of males who never married in N.O is 43.7 % versus the USA percentage of 30.3%.
Females it is 38.6% versus USA average of 24.1%--they just don't get married much in New Orleans. A high percentage of people on welfare correlates with this fact.
Transportation to Work by Public Transportation:
13.7% for New Orleans versus the USA average of 4.7%.

Thanks for the ping!
I don't think that anyone would describe the insurrection in 1917 which the Bolsheviks took advantage of, a riot.
Similarly the Hutus in Rwanda were actually in charge of the government at the time the genocide occurred. It was a calculated campaign that lasted well over three months and was systematically directed by the Hutu government. I would hardly call it a riot.
Your last case in India was indeed a riot as it was spontaneous and without direction. The fact that religion played a part still does not in any way dispute my argument since most of the people who rioted were poor.
I did not claim that poverty or class is a cause of riots, rather that rioting is usually associated with the lowest class. The middle class rarely if ever riots, rather they engage in calculated revolutionary activities rather than wanton destruction and pillaging.
I suppose that the cause of the draft riots in New York during the civil war carried out by Irish immigrants in which the primary victims were black was due to socialism and collectivism. Sorry, I don't buy it.
True.
This is maybe to be expected due to the apparently large rich/white population in NO.
Its got an aspect of a "BoBo" town, being "cool", and it is also a university town.
Its also still got its traditional upper class still living in the city, like New York and San Francisco.
In other cities these people would all have found a tony suburb.
The Democrats and race hustlers (Congressional Black Caucus, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, et al.) who are turning this human catastrophe into a political hammer are *worse* than the looters walking over dead bodies to steal and firing upon the rescue choppers. They have no souls.
Racial division and the 'race card' will outlive you and I thanks to select jackasses. This is a watershed moment for the so-called "civil rights" leaders and they have failed an entire generation and are the shame of this nation.
I wish we could get that through to Jackson, Sharpton, the Congressional Black Caucus, the mayor of New Orleans and others who only see racial statistics and political power not HUMAN BEINGS.
The sooner the divisive, hate-fueling folks have lived out their lives' final chapters, the better off this nation, and the people they claim to speak for, will be.
From the outpouring of sympathy, of volunteerism, of donations, of opened homes and more the *mainstream* of America sees only their fellow Americans. And, on that measure, I've got some hope for our country's future.
ping for reference
I believe I also read that the city's bus services were stopped at noon on Sunday.
Nagin has thousands of deaths on his shoulders, IMO.
Thanks for the great info. Added it to my armory of facts.
Yes, very importnat piece of info.
There are starting to be a number of pieces of the puzzle coming together to pin Numnut Nagin (and Bozo Blanco) as the culprits who are the main reason for the disaster.
If you have yet to read # 34 and #54, do that.
Add the info in these two posts, combined with the National Weather Service warning Nagin to get the people out, combined with President Bush telling Bozo Blanco to evacuate and you can see that Numnut Nagin and the locals caused this disaster.
Also, the people were waiting in the city because welfare checks were about to be delivered, and Numnut Nagin did not assure then that they will be taken care of and to not stay in the city for the welfare checks.
"How do these numbers add up? The town's population is 1/2 Million. There are 20-30 K evacuees and 10K or so dead? (I think that's the number I heard on the way home.) That means 10% of the town stuck around for the wind."
Yup. And now WE are gonne have to pay for their decision to stay/refusal to obey a direct order.
