President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

I am getting to the point that I don't give a flying hoot anymore

I am getting to that point and almost everyone I know, with no ties to the south, feel the same way. The media is single handedly destroying a lot of good will with their political bashing and efforts to make this about race. It's, at this point, another Democrat Wellstone moment and there are going to be a lot of people of good will driven to indifference.

30,000 people is what he is saying, but he is also saying it's 6 days after the storm...I am tired of hearing how help wasn't there on time. Katrina hit Monday

The clock on MSNBC said 4 days and 16 hours

Economic losses from Hurricane Katrina's deadly carnage could top 100 billion dollars, forecasters said as oil and port operators battled to resume operations.

Yeah, I'm angry at them too.

They stayed behind after being told to get out. They have some responsibility here, THEY blew it first. Then they make it worse with the lawlessness. Time these "victims" step up and accept their responsibility too. never to mention they also elected the very incompetant Mayor and Governor.

Noticed Geraldo distanced himself pretty quickly from the police chief. Geraldo wandered off and the interview ended abruptly. Someone said something to the police chief right before that...police chief either lost it or was trying to claim some fame. An embarrassing interview. Even O'R looked sheepish and they dumped out of it. Totally nonproductive...designed to stir people up. The people around them looked pretty calm to me. Lots of people have been bused out...takes time.

i think he's acting as a conduit between the poor people on the ground who know what needs to be done and the Feds.

that would normally be the job of the mayor and governor, but, well they dropped the ball long ago.

It looked to me like one of his superiors tried to come over and ask him what his problem was. But Whorealdo wanted him to keep yelling and screaming and getting others agitated.

Whoraldo needs to be evac'ed out of there. Before HE incites a riot.

I felt horribly sorry for them at first. But now, seeing that NONE OF THEM LEFT, I'm just disgusted. Also disgusted at the MONEY and human lives at stake to save these idiots.

Another man walked up and Geraldo referred to him as "Captain". That man just waved off the microphone.

Police officer and Geraldo HYSTERICAL.

Oh man, it must be something in the air. EVERYONE is crazy down there. The Chief, Mayor, and Governor ALL need to get a grip big time. There is no leadership at all in the whole STATE.

Well someone has to do it, so I am watching the relief concert on NBC. Opened with Harry Conick and some jazz musicians.

I don't have the stomach to watch that

"Did you catch how AS started the interview:

There is *nothing* happening in Waveland per Anderson.

Later, when Lott [who lost his house in Pascagoula] says that volunteers with a tractor and a bob cat showed up from Florida, cleaning a street, helping later a lady out of her home, etc. That's who's helping.

Anderson concluded with, yes, that's happening on every block in Waveland, too."

He is just tripping all over himself.

I think when this settles, most American's will think the same thing about them staying.

Also, the Gov of LA and the mayor on NO will take the fall for not being prepared.
