President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

I'm generally not as rabid an anti-Hillary type as many here - I think the danger she poses is somewhat overblown - but the Witt appointment is a giant red flag. There is no more loyal Clinton apparatchik than Jamie Lee.

Oh I am. First there was the snotty remark about not sitting home baking cookies, then there she was defending the husband who publicly humiliated her. I'm not even going into all her crimes, I'm just talking about her as a woman.

As for Witt, I honestly don't know who he/she is, but loyal Clinton apparatchik sums up how things will work. BAH!!!!!

I just found out 50 evacuees are coming to my town tonight to be housed at the Salvation Army. (West Kentucky)I called and asked what I could do. They asked for pillows. Plenty of beds, no pillows. Got them and lots of paper supplies. My brother donated a big screen tv and I took a DVD player and lots of kid's movies. Also card and board games.

There are things we can all do to help. Let's all just pool resources and do what little we can. Whereever these poor people end up, it's not going to be short term. Many won't go back. Too much horror.

I finnally stopped crying and raging at my TV and did something to help. All of us can do something.

yes, but to have an honest and productive process review - you have to come to terms with when and how the federal government shoud take over the civil order part of the problem. right away in every case? how long do you wait to make the judgement that a mayor and governor are inept? if Bush had done that within 8 hours of the incident let's say, the Dems would be screaming that he was a racist for declaring the mayor incompetent "too soon".

"I like my job in Naperville, but conservative women don't seem very abundant here, and most that do exist seem to be married."

OK you get a pass. I can relate. Not an abundance of single conservative men in the Seattle area either.

I've already learned first-hand in real-time and cyber -- JUST HOW MANY PEOPLE, thanks to "PC education standards" haven't a clue as to how the US government works - federal and states. An investigation might be exactly what the population needs. I'd call the "education" investigation "No Adult Left Behind".

I hope there are some decent Dems in NOLA keeping all the pertinent Documents from being shredded and saving the hard drives from being destroyed from the computers. They can try and destroy all the records and claim that the flood got them. If the Clintonista's are in charge of this mess we all know that they are experts at destroying evidence.

Hell if I know. If we have a nuclear attack the fallout would be too deadly to enter, or so I would think.

That's why we take pre-emptory measures to prevent it's occurence. Too late at that point.

Just another cowardly opportunistic grandstanding politician that thinks he knows better than everybody else eager to get two cents of attention in the MSM. These people have no clue how every word they think advances them, diminishes them in the eyes of those that really count.

Oh, wonderful. Geraldo is back on. Apparently he's no longer holding up babies screaming on camera at least.

How will we ever thank him?

I'm one who has been as frustrated as Shep. This isn't easy. I'm from the area to boot and am heartbroken over all of this. All my memories as a young man are there.

I knew the effort was coming but it was frustrating to see people without water on television.

I'm not perfect. I've been emotional, as many here will certainly note. I can't blame Shep too much. He's from the area too. How he's reported hasn't really mattered in this tragedy that is bigger than the biggest of us. The rescue effort was coming all along.

I just keep hoping that when I wake up the next day this will all be some horrible nightmare. It still hasn't gotten through to me that this is real.

Good for you!

I agree that many of these people will stay, and the sooner they are integrated into each of the refugee destinations, the sooner that aspect of live will return to normal.

Too typical. Time for a good ol' "come to Jesus" meeting for the evacuees. I hate to sound like an opportunist, but this is the perfect time to illustrate to our fellow Americans, how bad they've been scammed. They're reading to hear the message....
