President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

"A TRIAD can be dropped from more than 10,000 feet with excellent accuracy."

Just curious. How big is the zone of the excellent accuracy, in square feet? I am visualizing the apron of the SD full of people or the I-10 overpass and wondering how much space would have to be clear of people for a successful 10000 ft drop.

Buck up, man. You've been in Texas long enough to the spirit of Texans. If Greta van Susteren can be in Texas for three days and not find anything to complain about, we must be doing okay.

I don't watch much TV, but in flipping for news, I've seen most of the shows. I don't think I've ever seen even a bit of a McGuyyver show though. I don't even know what the guy looks like or what channel it's on.

Somehow, I'm not conjuring up much regret either.

:-)

No offense, but what they did was in the old Civil Defense manuals of years gone by. That's exactly what they're supposed to do - well, pre-liberal era, anyway.

If a lot of people did this, the liberals are in for a long day and a short existence as a party.

"My goal is to complete life-saving operations, safely evacuate all affected areas, and transition our displaced citizens to begin restoring some semblance of normalcy to their lives."

That may be her goal - but it's happening with no thanks to her or the Mayor of NO. By the time Witt gets on board I think (and pray) that all affected areas will already be evacuated (US Armed Forces are in and she has no control of them anyway) and that their transition will be in the great state of Texas and/or other states, where she has NO control.

Get a grip toots, your gig is OVER!

Just dropping in to point out how joyful it is to watch the happy faces of evacuees as they're strapped into a military chopper and briefed on the flight out. (Fox right now.)

The expression on that woman's face is pure joy. It makes me elated just to see it.

She's thrilled!

Do we have here at FR, Governor Blanco's two days of statements archived, the ones to the effect that she had New Orleans under perfect control, that reports to the contrary were fiction (implying that help was neither needed or wanted), all made while the police stations and hospitals were being overrun?

If so, I think they will prove to be valuable later on.

thanks guys and gals, for the idea on what kind of protection weapons to have in prep for another one of these disasters...

any 'emergency kit list' floating around that lacks the inclusion of some kind of fire power, is kind of 'p*ssy' in my mind, IMHO

Update from a current AP article:

"By mid-afternoon, only pockets of stragglers remained in the streets around the convention center, and New Orleans paramedics began carting away the dead."

Excellent. They've got everyone there out. They're also gone from the interstate, and I hope they evac'd the remaining 2000 from the Dome. There were a few thousand at the airport too. Other than those that still need to be rescued from homes/apartments, the crowds have been looked after.

10mm ammo and 30-06 is a lot harder to find ammo for than .45 ACP and .308/7.62 NATO.

My primary "Oh ****" arm right now is my Saiga 12ga magfed semiauto (gas operated). They're cheap and reliable.
