President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.
The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.
The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.
Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WWL-TV New Orleans (via WFAA Dallas) - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity. Yahoo has also provided a relay.
WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.
WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.
WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.
WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.
WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).
United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Your ready kit needs to be unique to you. I have a pond with a 50,000 gallon capacity, and primary and backup large scale fiters, along with a long term supply of Clorox to make it function in the event it is needed.
Clearly each person will have different needs.
Basic requirements are, in order of priority" one gallon of potable water per person per day, first aid and medical supplies, with primary injuries being cuts, broken bones, gastric issues and ear, nose and throat issues, then 2 pounds of food per adult per day.
Additional requirements will depend on individual situations.
the best method I have found to construct a disaster preparedness kit is to buy a pad and a pen and carry it with you on your person for one week. Each time you are involved with a life supporting activity, write down what it will take for you to accomplish that task without the benefit of electricity, pumped gasoline, pumped water,
refrigeration, or any external support, including government and utility support.
It is not a task, it is a process, one that needs to be planned, executed, assessed and improved on an ongoing basis.
That said, peanut butter, jelly, crackers, ramen, instant soup, canned tuna, chicken, pouched beef, rice, elbow macaroni, canned or bottled spaghetti sauce, and a variety of canned vegetables make a good place to start.
Don't forget the duct tape.
On the subject of first aid kits, when wilderness backpacking, my first aid kit includes gauze, for blotting and covering, duct tape, a whistle, antiseptic ointment, a ziplock bag( used as a glove or, with a pinhole in it, an irrigation bag for cleaning dirty wounds), heavy duty painkillers, aspirin, rolaids, decongestants, a lighter, and a swiss army knife.
It weighs well under 1 pound.
It may look cool to do an emergency field appendectomy on TV, but out in the bush, it simply isn't going to happen.
If you want a full surgical kit in your home or car, fine, but for a portable kit, most people will just not know how to use it.
Did I mention duct tape?

Looking at it, I would add a large, good-quality knife to the list. Also, I think that the radio should be a good quality one that allows at least cranking and preferably both solar-charging and have an automobile adaptor.

The people banned together, went to a mall, lived out of the food court, formed a "semi-government/town," had rules, policed themselves. Saved themselves.

Thanks, I'll bet the average income is equally dramatic. The point is that the blue states have a lot of ability to help and aren't moving yet, compared to Texas, Florida, etc.
Is it just me being curious by nature, or does anyone else find it somewhat 'suspicious' that all these fires are breaking out around NO over the past day or so? I can understand 1 here or there (downed lines, gas leaks, chemicals, etc.), but it seems like there have been quite a few all of a sudden. The one earlier was supposedly at a Saks 5th Ave warehouse.

I don't know if they do, but 12ga would be my first choice for versatility. Pistols should be 9mm or .45 ACP for automatics and .357 Mag for revolvers (effectiveness plus commonality of ammo) intended for personal defense. ,22LR is useful for taking small game, and you can carry a LOT of ammo for a .22.
Rifles should be 5.56mm or 7.62 NATO.
I don't know about them, but mine includes a lovely S&W .38 and a 20-gauge shotgun. ;o)

Doesn't sound disturbing to me actually, sounds like true American spirit where they aren't just going to sit around expecting someone to save them. They brought order to chaos and saved themselves. I'd think of putting any of these people up for Gov or Mayor actually, they clearly had more sense.
The group establishing itself in the Mall is the smallest representative picture of how the US Government and all its branches work, in the large.
