President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

Reminds me of when I volunteered in the destruction of Andrew. I cooked hamburgers for the masses in a hot trailer canteen. Folks wanted rare, medium rare and complained when it was well done!

That area was inundated with water up the middle of the garage doors! That's what made it so bizarre. When the shot pulled out, you saw they were in the middle of utter devastation.

I want to know their story!

You have made a bad mistake.
Apologies are required. Elsewise, please take a break. Or the ownership of FR may impose a break.

Yes, and I have experience in same before, during and after hurricanes. A lot more people in this forum know plenty more about me than anyone knows about you.

You have to understand there are people posting on this forum who have experience in dealing with logistics and have participated in disaster operations around the world

You are correct and I share your frustration here, but name-calling isn't appropriate, so go ahead and do the honorable thing and apologize. It happens to the best of us, but we always try to apologize, right?

Did anyone see the shot on FNC of the family in the backyard inflatable pool? They were splashing around, waving at the helo, and having a good time. The irony was that it was a split screen with the FEMA spokesman talking about the horrible suffering of everyone in NO.

I did. There was flooding all around and they were frolicing in their pool. I'll bet the guy was well prepared for surviving. It's probably like a vacation for them and probably a heck of a lot better than a shelter.

I don't know dear. I'm so pissed off. He went to Houston to stir these poor victims up? What a sick man. I can tell you how it's playing in Philly from those "whiteys" like myself I've talked to. They are fuming. They don't like this race bating one bit. It doesn't even cross anyones mind that I know . This is all the press and politicians doing, it isn't the way the vast majority feels.

Supplies are being airdropped by HELICOPTER, not transport airplane.

The miltiary has already been on TV and explained why they're STILL not airdropping supplies to NO from C-130s.

Until they can get a LONG WIDE SWATH of dry land to drop on, they can't do it without dropping pallets everywhere, some of which will land on *people*.

See old refs to "bombing and killing people in Afghanistan with supplies".

Now, STFU.

I saw that. I wish the warning had been more specific. Such as "if you live in the 9th Ward and the storm surge is "x" the water will be "y" and you will be sitting on your roofs waiting for rescue. A direct hit will mean a storm surge of between "x" and "z".."

Perhaps streetcorner signposts should have been (or should in future be) marked with elevation--either a big red marker at sea level, or a big green marker at some standard height above sea level (say 6'). Then in areas where the red marker was 2' above the ground, a report of floods 2' above sea level would let people know that the water would be 4' above ground level.

Um, they've been dropping supplies via chopper since Wednesday morning.

This is not news.

The only difference is that now FEMA choppers are doing it instead of military ones.

I can't find a link anywhere to confirm but the CNN news scroll is stating that the middle eastern country of Qatar has offered 100 million for Hurricane relief.

I am stunned (even stuned). I am on record from early on saying the rest of the world can suck eggs, we don't need their help. It sure is nice though to see the offers coming in.

Condi Rice was most touched by Sri Lanka's offer of aid. A reporter asked why we would consider accepting aid from such a poor nation, especially considering that the US is still giving them aid. Her answer was much more eloquent but she said it makes a nation and its people feel good about themselves to help out. Sri Lanka offered very little and we could live without it but the act of giving made them feel proud.
