President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

"Now, CNN has gone into political, agenda-driven reporting, and I'm finding Fox's reporting better. "

I have been switching between FOX, CNN, and MSNBC. You're exactly right. Both CNN and MSNBC have blatant blame Bush biases in their reporting now. Fox continues mostly to show dual screen shots with better commentary.

I still switch between stations (on commercials) and Fox is clearly the winner now.

Who was Bush's first FEMA guy - the burly one with the crewcut? I can't think of his name right now

I saw that! I was thinking 'wow that water is dirty' because I thought it was Baton Rouge. Glad to see some people are getting back to normal. I didn't realize there were some areas that were ok.

Hi, don't forget to search out the FEMA offical who was fired last year for including civil unrest in a FEMA response drill.

% minutes ago on Foxnews, I just saw a family lounging in a above ground swimming pool, surrounded by the fllod waters, waving their pool skimmer and water toys while posing for the helicopter cameras. Only 2 blocks away men were scrounging for water dropped from a CG chopper.

Very strange. Understandable how some are stubborn and want to wait it out, but this is very strange.

You don't get credibility in life from anonymous internet postings.

You get it from helping people and doing the right thing when no ones looking.

You have to understand there are people posting on this forum who have experience in dealing with logistics and have participated in disaster operations around the world.

CNN: Al Sharpton is in Houston now!
Talking about the racist factor and also saying why we shouldn't call the victims "refugees". He's encouraging people to open their homes.

My mom has two rooms in Austin she wants to give. I don't have much space, but I can take in one, maybe two people. I'm trying to figure out how to go about doing this.

One more time:

You mean this guy?

FEMA is getting an earful from the man heading New Orleans' emergency operations.

Terry Ebbert says the federal agency's response to Katrina is "a national disgrace."

Ebbert says FEMA has been in the city for three days, but he says that has yet to result in any command and control. He says Mayor Ray Nagin has been "pushing and asking, but we're not getting any supplies."

The emergency chief says the evacuation of thousands from New Orleans to Texas has been "almost entirely" a Louisiana operation -- saying he hasn't seen "a single FEMA guy."

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1475330/posts?page=125

But what do we know about Ebbert?

Let's see:

Ebbert, 60, has been directing the city's new Office of Homeland Security and Public Safety since his appointment by Mayor Ray Nagin on Feb. 11. A highly decorated war hero and the former executive director of the nonprofit New Orleans Police Foundation, Ebbert has been given major powers and responsibilities as an executive assistant to the mayor. His duties are commensurate with his $114,676 annual salary.
Ebbert is charged with coordinating the city's terrorism response capabilities and obtaining federal and state funds for homeland security. He also will oversee the police and fire departments, the Office of Emergency Preparedness and city Emergency Medical Services, and the 911 Center or Orleans Parish Communications District.

His duties extend beyond a crisis or special events such as Mardi Gras. Ebbert has responsibility for the daily operations and planning of all those departments as well as the management of their budgets, Nagin told Gambit Weekly last week, after presenting his plan to re-organize city government to the City Council. "Mr. Ebbert is responsible for all matters related to public safety," the mayor said.

**So Ebbert, appointed by this mayor, IS the guy who should have had all this worked out!

"Maybe the networks have been asked not to speculate..in order to keep everyone "calmer"... "

I heard yesterday that MS wasn't issuing casualty numbers because the coroner needs to confirm them first.

Which might have been a stall tactic for what you said.

there was a REASON it took so long to open the SuperDome to those who stayed behind .. in 98 when Hurricane Georges was heading toward NO, the SD was open to the public, who went on to trash it, and loot what was available inside ... tv's, chairs, whatever!
