President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

More people would be killed in a stampede/fight for a few items than would die without food/water for an additional day.

Can you imagine the media coverage of that...how dare they just drop food on peoples heads without sending in someone to distribute...

This link you posted fascinates me:

http://www.thenewsstar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050903/NEWS05/50903001

because there's another link posted in this forum from the very same paper saying that reports of an increase in crime in Monroe are untrue?

They're doing the very same thing in Alexandria. One report did slip through the cracks at The Town Talk, only to be followed by more articles in which the Chiefs of Police of Alexandria and Pineville vehemently deny that there is any increase in crime here. In fact, Chief Daren Coutee of Alexandria said on KALB Newschannel 5 that he wished citizens would tell him who was starting these wild rumors so he could put those individuals in jail.

I was a crime victim myself this week, but no one wants to hear about it. Instead, I have literally been told by the local media that it isn't of significance *unless I can prove the crime was committed by a refugee* and that I should be grateful that my only loss was my $300 insurance deductible and not as great as the families in New Orleans.

What the...? Why does it matter where the person(s) who robbed me lived? The fact is that the individual(s) took advantage of the situation caused by Katrina to commit a crime spree! But, oops, I'd better not bang the drum too loudly because people think I'm a rumormonger.

Thanks for posting a very intriguing link.

Thanks for that link, since I have been one person asking consistently why airdrops were not done. I am not sure I
believe/accept the reasoning behind it, but it was good to see it had at least been considered.

It's not bizarre logic. Postponing a day to develop massive relief and infrastructure is sound logic. More people would be killed in a stampede/fight for a few items than would die without food/water for an additional day.

-------

Tell that comforting thought to families of those who died do to dehyradtion and the mother's of dead babies.

I sure they would have preferred to take their chance with a stampede and chance to live; then to have no chance at all.

Get Off His Back

By Ben Stein

Published 9/2/2005 11:59:59 PM

A few truths, for those who have ears and eyes and care to know the truth:

1.) The hurricane that hit New Orleans and Mississippi and Alabama was an astonishing tragedy. The suffering and loss of life and peace of mind of the residents of those areas is acutely horrifying.

2.) George Bush did not cause the hurricane. Hurricanes have been happening for eons. George Bush did not create them or unleash this one.

NO councilman is complaining that Louisiana is not taking enough evacuees. He doesn't want to "send our peoples to Georgia", "Why cants they stay here in this state? They still gots other churches and schools that could take some." "I'm begging all the powers that be to tell Louisiana not to turn our people away."

Oliver Thomas NO city councilman

Yeah!!!! He's saying all the reports of violence are notning but "rumors" - but "white families in Jefferson Parrish" are looting.

He's (NO City Councilman) obviously distraught and I agree with him that not everybody is a looter or a thug, but man is he making a fool of himself right now.

I continue to be shocked by the almost total absence of reporting on:

1) The aggregate death toll to date.

2) The estimated total death toll.

In every other disaster the MSM covers, the total number of dead is estimated in the lead sentence - it's what the whole story is about to them. Since about Wednesday, when it became evident that the toll in Mississippi was probably over 1,000, they have not even ventured a guess.
