President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

He means President Bush should try to look incompetent so Blanco doesn't appear as useless as she is. The Mayor probably also wants President Bush to take more of the blame for things that aren't his responsibility to take some of the heat off her.

12:27 P.M. - GALVESTON, TX (AP): Federal officials are chartering three Carnival Cruise Lines ships for six months to provide shelter for Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

The "Ecstasy," "Sensation" and "Holiday" are being pulled from regular use.

Ecstasy and Sensation will both be pulled Monday. They're scheduled to dock and house Katrina refugees in Galveston, Texas. The Holiday likely will be pulled Thursday and docked in Mobile, Alabama.

The Ecstasy and Sensation can each take about 2,600 passengers. The Holiday has capacity for about 1,800 people. Guests with canceled bookings will get refunds and the opportunity to re-book on any Carnival ship -- with a $100-per-person shipboard credit.

The "Elation," which operates from Galveston, will take over some of Ecstasy's schedule.

12:21 P.M. - HOUMA (AP): A teenager died and eight other people have been treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after two Houma families ran generators inside their homes to power appliances until power was returned after Hurricane Katrina. Click here.

Thanks for the link showing NOPD looting the store. A picture is worth a thousand words.

We had a lot of apologists yesterday making every excuse in the book for these crooked New Orleans cops.

LOL!

We can add Rafferty (I think that's his name) and Chrissy to the list (though, I think both of them were bonkers before the storm).

FEMA appeared to be overwhelmed by the enormity of the situation.

Undoubtedly -- the situation, once the flood started, turned out to be worse than anyone really expected. But I doubt that the locals directed them to problem areas or could give specific information on the situation. They can't fly blind.

It occurred to me while reading through this last thread that perhaps with a little editing for legal concerns, the Katrina threads would make a great book to be used for fund raising purposes. It might also be beneficial to any government entity looking at understanding public response to a disaster such as this has been.

Just a thought.

The headline from yesterday's Aftenposten (Norwegian newspaper) was, "They died because they are black." The Europeans are picking up the racial component.

My Norwegian friend showed me the paper and pointed out with surprise that the the word used for black was 'svarte,' which for them is like using the N-word. The PC word for blacks was African-American. So the paper was indicating that these people died because they were seen as n.....s.

Following is the text of e-mails sent to NBC and CNN within the last quarter hour:

"Just want you to know that as long as your news reports continue to politicize the Katrina disaster, I will be working my tail off on the internet to make sure that you are allowed to shoulder the financial burden of reclaiming and rebuilding New Orleans by yourselves.

Short and sweet, our checkbooks stay in our pockets until you start acting like you want us ***all*** to work together on this.

It is a predominantly Liberal city, and I do not believe that the Left alone has the resources to rebuild it.

If you want New Orleans to rise again, act accordingly.

If you want New Orleans to rot in its own filth until the Gulf of Mexico reclaims it, continue down the path you are on now.

No discussion, no argument, choose and choose now.

I am working just as hard as you are to make this happen and will continue to politicize this disaster just as long as you do."

Here is contact information for both of these networks:

http://www.cnn.com/feedback/

nightly@NBC.com

I suggest you make your feelings known to them.

If they want to play hardball, let's give them a good game.

Did you see on Fox and Friends this morning when they showed the replay of Kanye West giving his speech at the fundraiser on NBC last night...?

West had gone off script and was talking about how President Bush doesn't care about black people,...

and they went back to the F & F...and Julian started to say that he agree with him and something more about the way the black people are being treated...and the girl, and Steve Doocy cut him off abruptly...

They said they would discuss that after a commercial...but when the commercial was over..they never again mentioned anything about the racial aspects of this...whoa!!!!

They have got to figure out where the employees of critical industries are and get them back to the area. Temporary housing has to be set up for the refinery workers, the shipping companies, the communication workers and utility personnel. There will be a temporary city the size of most mid-sized US cities that will spring up in the coming days.

Administrative offices for these industries can be located pretty much elsewhere (Baton Rouge etc.) but the workers will have to be back at work ASAP.

Carnival had better be prepared to write the ships off as a donation, based on the total destruction of other facilities the evacuees have been housed in...unless they have plenty of armed guards to keep order.

Just heard that 300 babies were airlifted to Birmingham hospitals, and buses are taking people as far as Tuscaloosa. Hotel guests who were there for other purposes (business, football games) have voluntarily given up their rooms to evacuees.

International airport (NO) where they have triage set up says they're not getting medical supplies and people are in bad shape after their ordeal this week.
