President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

< He should be able to win the next race for governor, I would think. His district is wiped out, he'd be running against Blanco (if she isn't strung up) and the voter base in NO is somewhat... um... hampered. >

Looks like he'll be campaigning in Texas.

From AP:

At Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, thousands of people remained in a triage center, many of them dying for lack of medical care.

"The hallways are filled, the floors are filled. There are thousands of people there," said Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., who was at the airport. "A lot more than eight to 10 people are dying a day. It's a distribution problem. The doctors are doing a great job, the nurses are doing a great job."

Bill Frist is at the airport?? And he can't get evacuation happening there??

A most remarkable sight just now on FOX at the Convention Center (Geraldo reporting this)

An enormous group of Vietnamese-Americans (from a parish I don't know)- sitting together in a group- quietly. They have told authorities they will wait til everyone else has been taken out...as they "don't want to get in the way"...

"but, earlier this morning, I unfortunately turned on MSNBC, and they were talking to someone in London and asked him how the people their and other Europe cities are reacting..
First, he said that is all that is being talked about..but then said that Europe, from the leaders to the media, to the citizens ALL are saying what a lousy job Bush has done..."

Part of the problem is that people in the rest of the world and many in this country don't understand or forget that this country is a REPUBLIC made up of 50 states. Every state has a Governor, which is the state's CEO. The state is supposed to be prepared and do the initial work and coordination and protect its citizens. The Federal gov't cannot step in unless and until they're asked to by the Gov.

I don’t want people who live here all the time to be the victims of the thugs coming out of New Orleans,” Fewell said.

That's basically what the mayor of Baton Rouge (who is black) also said. No racism involved, just acknowledgement that there are criminal aspects to some of those that may be leaving NO.

I would imagine that this is why the transport was halted at the Dome and started up at the Convention Center. They've identified the hard cases and made sure they didn't get loaded up to go to the shelters. The 5,000 that are remaining at the Dome will be among the last out of NO. There is some crude pre-screening going on (perhaps identified by the people in the Dome). I think the same will happen elsewhere. One of the good things about the looting footage is that those people will be identified and put in places that won't be too pleasant for them with an awful lot of security.

They might want to hold open a couple rooms for Geraldo, Shep, Anderson Cooper, Scarborough...etc. They have all gone a little bonkers over this. HMMMMMMMMMMM--all men, very curious!!! LOL

Well, I'm not sure you can really call Anderson Cooper a "man"...

Also from AP about the evacuations picking up:

NEW ORLEANS - Planes, trains and buses delivered refugees to safety on Saturday as the evacuation of this ruined city finally appeared to pick up steam.

Buses had evacuated most people from the frightening confines of the Superdome by early morning. At the equally squalid convention center, thousands of people began pushing and dragging their belongings up the street to more than a dozen air-conditioned buses, the mood more numb than jubilant.

More than 50,000 people had been trapped for days at the two filthy, sweltering buildings, suffering from a lack of food, water or medical attention. Help came too late for a number of them — dead bodies were a common sight, in wheelchairs, wrapped in blankets or just abandoned."

All you can do is follow evac orders, but that doesn't mean you'll miss the fury of the storm.

True but New Orleans is the worst place to be as proven..it was only set up to survive a cat 3 most deaths will be from the surge and flooding not the winds...

Those people at the Convention Center, who were told to assemble there and then forgotten and abandoned by local government, lined up, old and infirm at the head of the line, in a desperate attempt to show that they weren't thugs, hoping to get buses, helicopters, or even more drops of food and water.

I also saw an interview (replay) with Jesse Jackson..and he was talking some jibberish about slave ships landing in New Orleans, and that the black people were kept "down" right off the slave ships...

and that is why they are looting in New Orleans, NOW...blah, blah...it didn't make sense...but he managed to get every bit of racist blame in one or two paragraphs, that he could.

Oh, and I should have responded: Nowhere in what you listed does it detail that pets can be left behind.

Freepers in the area said the ads on television made it clear that anyone who abandoned animals would be charged with animal endangerment.

Doesn't that just tick you off? Well hopefully the truth will be told and that impression will leave them. This President has been thrown just about everything possible, and like FDR (that made many bad choices and was not a perfect man) Bush will go down in history as a great leader that led us through so much.

Thank you for reminding us all of this. I was thinking today how close we are to the people in New Orleans, with a liberal idiot in the governor's seat. Then I was thinking how much I had better stock up (again) because in a natural disaster here, we would be just as likely to be assisted as the people in NO were. Before anyone castigates me, the primary disaster here would be an earthquake and there are not advance warnings for those, so our family could and may be in need of help after one.

They know what it's like, and they know that they're a large and cohesive enough group to survive until everyone else is gone. As I said in a prior thread, these people make me proud that they chose to stay here in the US.
