President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Now that evacuations are taking place I feel I can ask a question.

I saw that Mexico has offerred assistance. Does anyone know what form this assistance is taking? Money? Oil? 1 million Mexicans to form a bucket brigade to bail out the soup?

I haven't been out there in a while...sorry to hear they didn't make "better" use of it.

Have you been to the "new" National Cemetary near Loop 12?

My father's and now my mother's ashes are there----it is beautiful.

I was the one that voiced the initial concern. LSM was agreeing with you. If dropping the level down in a day will save those still trapped in their attics, then the decision is an easy one ... blow the levees and let the water out.

may the gangs and thugs meet the real men with guns

Good for FOX. As for the rest, very shortly I will be drafting a letter to NBC and CNN. In it I will make it clear that as long as they appear to be unhappy with the help we are sending, I will comply with their wishes, stand back, and allow them to do the job they claim they can do better.

In other words, my checkbook will stay in my pocket.

Considering that it is questionable whether the whole country working together has the resources to reclaim and rebuild New Orleans, and considering that New Orleans is a predominantly Democratic city, it becomes clear just who needs who to avoid a catastrophic and permanent political disaster.

I didn't open the political maneuvering, but if they choose to play hardball and try to politicize a natural disaster, then hardball is the exact game I intend to play.

"My question, where are the other states? I am happy Texas is helping out, but what about New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee etc...???"

The Gov of Ala said yesterday during the presser w the Prez that he's instructed his folks to look at where they could take in evacuees - 2 places they're looking at are a closed base and a mental health hospital that was closed last year.

Then again, they didn't have one of their cities destroyed in 1900, either.

And Texas also had Indianola destroyed. It rivaled the Port of New Orleans. My relatives all came through Indianola on the immigrant ships. I'm sure many Texans have visited the barren spot of sand where it once stood.

She is right about that, because after the 4 Canes in Fla last year we have very low unemployment and especially in the Construction business. We also have more people moving to Fla all the time. There will be jobs for everyone that wants one, the only drawback is it is harder to get the best employees when the un-employment rate is so low because you have a smaller pool to pick from.

New Orlean's ads before the storm were telling people if they evacuated and left their pets behind, they would be prosecuted for animal abandonment if appropriate arrangements were not made. Talk about discouraging people from leaving!

Thats strange because on the city website they tell you how to leave your pets..:

http://www.cityofno.com/portal.aspx?portal=46&tabid=24

Protecting your pets

It's important to include your pet in your plan of action. You will need to know what to do with your pet since they're not allowed in evacuation shelters or most hotels.

You basically have three choices: take them with you, leave them home, or find a place for them to stay.

Taking them with you, checklist
• ID collar
• Current rabies tags
• Pet carrier
• Leash
• Food & water bowls
• Food & water
• Medicines, presription or over-the-counter
• Toy
• Cat box, litter & pooper-scooper

Leaving your pet at home
• Confine your pet to a safe, high-area inside your home, away from windows and outside walls.
• Leave water in a sturdy no spill container
• Give them a three-day supply of dry food
• Post a notice outside your home listing what animals are inside and where they are located
• Never leave pets together during a disaster
• Never leave pets chained or loose outside

Places pets can stay
• At a friend's or family member's home in a safe inland area
• With you at the hotel, if the establishment allows pets
• A kennel with boarding capabilities outside the risk area
• Bring them indoors with your family if you decide not to evacuate

I keep meaning to get out there and see it, but I haven't been yet.

There are still some chopper units that work out of NAS Dallas, but I think they're on the Vought side, not sure. Mostly heavy-lift choppers, CH-47s.

Tony is on vacation until Monday...as for Brit..

I think Fox made a HUGH mistake, taking his show off temporarily to show this hurricane coverage...

HIS show does everything the best on FOX...they are really messing up lately.

I suggest you look at HughHewitt.com he's trying to match up churches in the Miss Gulf Area that will act as distribution points with donations for operations.

Well-said. The thugs and rapists will get their just reward, in this world or the next.

but was that direction coming to the police from someone who knew where the resources were going to be staged?
This sounds again like a lack of local communication with the source of resources.

Do us a favor - archive their whole site.

It will be interesting to see how they change it per the CYA doctrine afterwards.

I was just channel surfing and stopped at PMSNBC. They were showing the end of the fund raiser that they had on NBC last night. Everyone was on stage. Aaron Neville (I think that's his name) was in front. What's up with his body? He looks like he's been bulking up and on steroids (actually, his upper body looked like he might be taking estrogen). What I'm saying is he looked terrible. Anybody know if he has been "body building" or something? If so, i looks like he did it wrong.

LOL---mental hospital, huh?

They might want to hold open a couple rooms for Geraldo, Shep, Anderson Cooper, Scarborough...etc.

They have all gone a little bonkers over this.

HMMMMMMMMMMM--all men, very curious!!! LOL

Those numbers jibe with other reports, and are probably about as accurate as we can expect at this time.

I just want to point up where we are at, and how much further we have yet to go.
