President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

The Monroe murders of volunteers story debunked?

"Rumors of murder and general mayhem among evacuees in Monroe have been swirling amid the confusion of Hurricane Katrina.

The rumors run the gamut — from the murder of volunteers in their homes to infant kidnappings. Local law enforcement said that's exactly what they are — rumors."

Heh.

I suspect that what we'll find is that a good percentage of the welfare drones in NO were locked into that cycle - no employment, not enough funds from the state to go look for employment that pays more than welfare in other places than NO, etc., etc. Bringing them here, where we have lots of jobs and lots of opportunities to better yourself, with little corruption, will probably let them become productive members of society again.

Some, I expect, will not - we'll send those back when NO or the replacement city is rebuilt.

Just a word on Homeland Security, FEMA and the leadership of this President.

Our hospital here in Ohio........in fact, every hospital in the country..........is being involved in the medical side of this rescue effort.

This interconnection and organization has only happened SINCE 9/11, and due to the leadership of President Bush in getting HS in gear.

The infrastructure is now in place to deal with all kinds of disasters. But it depends on the local and state authorities to do what they are instructed to do to prepare.

And in this case, tragically, the local and state authorities did not do so.

Yep, we had the BR police on the news saying "quit listening to rumors, not true"....then they added they had "closed all govt offices by the River Center shelter, were on lock-down", but gave no reason for it.

Try the streaming feed at www.wwltv.com or www.wdsu.com. Both stations keep making an effort to get out info on the other parishes.

“I don’t want people who live here all the time to be the victims of the thugs coming out of New Orleans,” Fewell said.

That's basically what the mayor of Baton Rouge (who is black) also said. No racism involved, just acknowledgement that there are criminal aspects to some of those that may be leaving NO.

On the other hand, I think most of the "thugs" will stay and see how much more looting they can get away with.

I did hear that Baton Rouge is asking for more security forces this morning, so you wonder if things may be getting tense there.

Herman Cain is the millionaire Owner of "Godfather's Pizza". He is a Pubbie and ran for Senate from Ga and lost in Primary to the current GOP Senator from Ga. He is a great guy with a great story and lots of money to tech others how to be great entrepreneurs like him.

Anyone else see Jim Rogers on Fox on Neil Cavuto's show totally blame the Levey Commission of New Orlearns for this disaster. He's from the area and said the Levey Commission spent their money on casino's and yacht's. The truth is finally getting through. I'm sick of people blaming this on President Bush.

It is a shame how much the decent citizens will end up suffering for what the thugs in their neighboorhood did and are doing.

I hope the gangs stay and are slaughtered.
But it would be kidding myself to think some criminals and gang members arent in those buses.

From WDSU: Some FEMA badges and IDs have been stolen in New Orleans. They are warning citizens to be on the lookout for people posing as FEMA employees.

Good grief. And the people who need to know, probably aren't hearing the warning.

Also, as a Florida resident I want to inform the know-it-alls that when you are able to drive out of town -- like we wanted to in 2004 ahead of hurricane Frances ... the motels and hotels are completely full, no vacancies.....

You know what? SO WHAT!!! A hurricane lasts what, maybe 12-24 hours, max??? SO WHAT if there's no f'in HOTEL to stay in while you ride out the storm! Drive 400 miles away from the storm, sit/sleep in your car for 24 hours, then drive back!! No hotel is no excuse for not evacuating! Get the hell out and don't become part of the problem afterwards by being one of the people needing to be rescued!!

(And for the smart-asses who need to have it spelled out: In THIS case, they wouldn't have been able to drive back the next day, but AT LEAST THEY WOULDN'T BE NEEDING RESCUE... and they could keep driving west/north until they find housing. But MOST of the time, for MOST people, homes are not completely destroyed in a hurricane, so MOST of the time you could drive back the next day.

PS: I am not necessarily directing this at you, but to everyone who thinks "no hotel" is a valid reason not to evacuate when a cat 4-5 hurricane is bearing down on you.

I voted for Bobby Jindal! And to all those that did not, shame on you!

He should be able to win the next race for governor, I would think. His district is wiped out, he'd be running against Blanco (if she isn't strung up) and the voter base in NO is somewhat... um... hampered.
