President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.
The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.
The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.
Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WWL-TV New Orleans (via WFAA Dallas) - WWL-TV is operating from studios at Louisiana Public Broadcasting. CBS has a relay during the morning and afternoon. When available, use the CBS relay first as they have greater streaming capacity. Yahoo has also provided a relay.
WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.
WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.
WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.
WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.
WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).
United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

I saw an interview two days ago with someone from the projects by the French Quarter. The young man said that when it's time to vote, Nagin and his ilk were all over down there saying "Vote for us. We're homies", but that when this happened, they were nowhere to be seen, and had gotten themselves and their families out, and could've cared less about their voting base.
LOL! I'm sure there are crazies who would have said this astute young man was a Rove Plant.

Jerry is being dramatic once again.
The saddest thing to me is that all of these 1000's of people are so dependant on the government to meet their every need, that they are paralyzed when the time comes to care for themselves. The young guy that took the school bus full of people to the Astrodome is an exception from what I've seen.
I have to thank you again for the links. Watching that FEMA joint briefing was illuminating. I don't see the cable soup reporting on the highlights of that.

You might want to take a look at the Texas state emergency plans, should you get the chance.
Last I looked, among other things, we have plans in place to deal with the loss of up to three cities at once.

We should also note, that last year after Ivan, the American Red Cross told Mayor Nigan that they would no longer be setting up shelters in New Orleans for any hurricanes stronger than a Cat-2. Even as they noted at that time, NO was ill-equiped and too dangerous to handle anything above that category.
Nigan in response said that he would make every effort to get people out of the city...and those who were ill, could use the Superdome. Apparently, he took heat after Ivan for not even opening it up until late in the crisis. But even as others pointed out, the Superdome was insufficient for such a disaster because it would become an island with thousands trapped inside.
As Gwen Jones (A NO refugee) just noted on Fox...were where the buses mayor Nigan. The poor lady was carrying a sign with his name on it and he didn't to anything different than last year when he was warned.
"Why aren't they showing the evacuations like Fox is showing?? They're showing everything but that."

That's absolutely appalling.
I turned off CNN because a reporter was inciting some lady at the airport to how bad things had been at the convention center. So if there are evacs happening at the convention center, they move their coverage to the airport? If evacs happen there, they would go to the people on the interstate?
That is just truly appalling.

Shepard Smith eyewitness report on O'Reilly: Mayor Ray Nagin intervened today to help tourists (many foreigners) staying at the upscale W hotel downtown escape New Orleans ahead of many of the people in the Superdomw. Tourists were shipped in buses to the Superdome and other connecting buses took them to safety.
Black Mayor Ray Nagin favors "W" tourists. Imagine that headline after all the racist garbage thrown at the President.
Exactly. The media has sounded like the squalid conditions are creating the crimes, instead of the truth that these people are criminals in the first place, and taking advantage of the situation they are in to commit further crimes.
(It is also my understanding that some of these refugees were prisoners who got released because of the flood..........which would all by itself, account for the increase).
Whoa. A distinguished black gentleman on Fox just stated very clearly that the "blame" for this does not rest with President Bush. It rests with the folks responsible for providing leadership on the ground when the disaster strikes. Amazing that some people actually understand that.

That is impressive. I will look at it. I plan on this next week talking with our business continuity planners about what exactly we do plan on doing in this type of emergency.
This is a great segment. The local officials had money for x, y, z, but did nothing to upgrade the levies. They should be removed from power immediately...

On the pumps, someone the other day that Haliburton has equipment that could be barged in. These monster pumps can put out hundreds of barrels per minute, and are capable of pumping sand, grit ect. Anyone here work offshore for Haliburton?
I seem to remember someone was bit by a cottonmouth. But, it is all fuzzy.
