President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Morning, Folks. I was always wondering if them Mannings I heard about in the NFL were Archie's kids, but I was always to lazy to look it up.

I already need

Even though I found out my relatives in Purvis (just below Hattiesburg) survived (with only a few trees on the house), I can't get through to know if they have edible food and drinking water. Prayers to all affected.

Just saw an interview on Fox with a Lt McLeary (sp?) of the LA State Police.

------

Well, there are plenty of people to contradict this LSP trooper. Including a medical doctor who was interviewed by the news.

Based on the NG complaining about the LSP on the police scanner, I really don't believe the LSP. They were largely AWOL when needed. Forget the NO PD as they were a non-issue.

I hope there is some investigation into the dereliction of duty of local and state police after this storm.

"There have been rapes, there has been gang warfare in the Superdome because they have all the different street gangs in there.

Even the Police Chief Eddie Compass said there was such a crush around a squad of 88 officers they retreated when they went in to check out reports of assaults.

"We have individuals getting raped, we have individuals getting beaten. Tourists are walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

Morning knit. Oh yeah. Archie and Olivia raised them some fine boys! They are "gods" in Tennessee. Archie came up here to Johnson City a few years back to support a Souper Bowl event (charity event.) Somewhat ironic how things work out, recalling the whooping he put on the Vols when he quarterbacked Ole Miss. I believe it was 38 - 0.

Peyton still in involved with Tennessee football. Has been working with our QB's.

Forgive me if this is posted within a thread, the threads are overwhelmingly long =)

I thought I read in a FR hurricane thread that President Bush could not intervene before the local and state goverment, legally.

Is this fact?

Of that I'm not sure of. But what I am sure of is the the state & local government is the first line of defense, and in NO case they failed miserably!

and the public transport buses all of those supposedly unable to evacuate themselves

You mean these buses (it's amazing how much you can find with a couple of searches on google)?

The bottom line....they waited too long to order evac orders.

In Florida they start ordering evacuations days before and provide evacuation for those unable to provide it for themselves.

The local government did not have a plan. Has anybody seen any talk of an EOC in New Orleans being activated before the storm?

The LSP are liars. Now they are trying to cover up the rapes and murders at the Superdome. Well, they might want to talk to these folks first.

Murder and Mayhem in New Orlean's Miserable Shelter: Lessons from the Dome
Reuters ^ | September 2, 2005 | Mark Egan

Valenti and her husband, two of very few white people in the almost exclusively black refugee camp, said she and other whites were threatened with murder on Thursday.

"They hated us. Four young black men told us the buses were going to come last night and pick up the elderly so they were going to kill us," she said, sobbing. "They were plotting to murder us and then they sent the buses away because we would all be killed if the buses came -- that's what the people in charge told us this morning."

Other survivors recounted horrific cases of sexual assault and murder.

Sitting with her daughter and other relatives, Trolkyn Joseph, 37, said men had wandered the cavernous convention center in recent nights raping and murdering children.

She said she found a dead 14-year old girl at 5 a.m. on Friday morning, four hours after the young girl went missing from her parents inside the convention center.

"She was raped for four hours until she was dead," Joseph said through tears. "Another child, a seven-year old boy was found raped and murdered in the kitchen freezer last night."

Prisoners coming to the Astrodome?

http://lonestartimes.com/index.php?p=1425
by David Benzion | 09/01/2005 12:18 am

According to Harris County Judge Robert Eckles, the Houston Chronicle is expected to run a story in the morning stating that the Astrodome will be "home" to about 100 prisoners from New Orleans. Eckles says the situation is a bit more nuanced than that:
* It appears that New Orleans police were forced to take about 100 prisoners to the Superdome during Hurricane Katrina.
* For whatever reason, these prisoners were allowed by the NOPD to mingle freely with the larger population inside the Superdome.
* When it was time for everyone to leave, NOPD were shocked to discover that not all of the 100 prisoners wanted to identify themselves and step forward for the priviledge of going back to jail.

"Lots of people seem to have short memories.
I have more confidence in Bush right now than I ever will with any non common sense Hellary or Kerry in charge.
Louisiana is suffering under what many voters get when they vote emotions over common sense.
Jindal has show much more back bone than any of the Democrats at any level of government and that includes Blanco and Landrieu"

You are absolutely correct. I also think Jindal would have done a better job, particularly since he was working for the Health and Human Services branch of the Bush admin. He would have done better evacuating hospitals and dealing with the health crisis. He must be really frustrated now, as a junior representative to Congress.

This blind hatred of President Bush is one of the most scary things I have ever seen in my lifetime. It's to the point of insanity. My sister and niece has some of it, and it's not even rational. It's almost satanic. I know conservatives hated Clinton with a passion but I don't think it is at the level that some people hate President Bush. He is a very good man with the toughest job in the world, especially now. He is NOT a racist. This is crazy.

Anybody watching Fox and Friends? Just a few minutes ago they did a segment on Mike Myers and Kanye (I have no idea who this is) speaking at an NBC fundraiser last night. Kanye departed from the script and started Bush-bashing and blaming the slow response on race.

After the segment, Julian began to interject that the guy might be right and was cut off by Doocy who said, "now is not the time...". Julian came back with, "but it has to be discussed...". At that point Juliet literally raised her hands to keep them separated and just began talking about the next segment. There definitely was some aggravation there. Everytime it comes up you can tell that Julian is dying to jump onto a race soap box.

I caught that - Julian almost always says something very stupid on the weekend show - today is no exception. It's good to see Steve this morning rather than that nitwit Mike.
