President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

There is a local director for disaster relief in every municipality – that person is called the Mayor.

Yep, we had a thread on this today, someone looked up the NOLA's evacuation plan (*if* you could call it that).

Last line, The mayor is in charge of it.

Did you hear that the reason for that tragic bus rollover that caused at least one death I heard of, was because of an unruly passenger harrassing the driver? We not only have to worry about the brutal terrorists, we have unbelievably dangerous sick and savage beasts walking this country ...spilling out right now from their nest in NO.

Look at poor Waveland and Pass Christian (the west of Gulfport pic ... just so sad)

I'm curious about the allegation that some of Houston's homeless people are mingling with the New Orleans refugees -- didn't the people have to be taken off of buses before they are allowed inside the Astrodome? I'm wondering how a local homeless person might have gained entry on foot.

A few more unruly passengers have been reported on planes due to land soon.

I guess those reinforced cockpit doors President BUSH ordered are saving some lives right now. Good call, W.

They still have fingerprints, and computers can check that in seconds now.

I understand a number of arrests have been made of wanted people who were getting off the buses in TX. :)

Were the Vietnamese screaming about the government not helping them? Of course not. They go about their business and make the best of things. When I lived in TX I was always amazed at the Vietnamese and their perserverence.

It would be a great relief from the "racial" talking points they are gushing out with today, don't you think? Or do you just like to make fun of people's posts?

I think the idea that any news organization would make a big news story out of some guy holding a few pets for refugees is ridiculous when a million people are dead, dying, or homeless. I guess it's just me.

I'm a decent cook I just don't enjoy doing it anymore. I love Paula Dean though. Her recipes are really simple.

I'm yawning here, going to bed. Nite

Let us know if you can pick and choose.

My wife and I have discussed it too, but decided only to do it through our church with good personal recommendations.
