President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Is it possible that people are still showing up in the 10's of thousands?

NG gets there... buses most out, hands out food and water to the few remaining... leaves .... then thousands MORE show up?

I heard somewhere at one point something to that effect.. that people were showing up at the dome or wherever faster than they were busing them out...

It would explain the incongruity between Shep/Geraldo's statements and the NG.. but who knows?

Some folks can't take the truth and are WORSE than the MSM.

Better to sugar coat everything for the sensitive fairy tale lovers.

Yeah, maybe since the liberals seem to have all the "answers," let's send them the thugs to house and rehabilitate.

Same guy in a 2002 PBS Special on a Cat 5 hurricane drill....complaining about FEMAs response....

http://www.pbs.org/now/transcript/transcript_neworleans.html

WALTER MAESTRI: A couple of days ago we actually had an exercise where we brought a fictitious Category Five hurricane--

WALTER MAESTRI: Well, when the exercise was completed it was evident that we were going to lose a lot of people we changed the name of the storm from Delaney to K-Y-A-G-B... kiss your ass goodbye... because anybody who was here as that Category Five storm came across... was gone.

WALTER MAESTRI: It's going to look like a massive shipwreck. There's going to be-- there's going to be, you know-- everything that that the water has carried in is going to be there. Alligators, moccasins, you know every kind of rodent that you could think of.

All of your sewage treatment plants are under water. And of course the material is flowing free in the community. Disease becomes a distinct possibility now. The petrochemicals that are produced all up and down the Mississippi River --much of that has floated into this bowl. I mean this has become, you know, the biggest toxic waste dump in the world now. Is the city of New Orleans because of what has happened.

WALTER MAESTRI: The hurricane is spinning counter-clockwise. It's been pushing in front of it water from the Gulf of Mexico for days. It's now got a wall of water in front of it some 30, 40 feet high. As it approaches the levies of the-- the-- that surround the city, it tops those levees. As the storm continues to pass over. Now Lake Ponchetrain, that water from Lake Ponchartrain is now pushed on to that - those population which has been fleeing from the western side and everybody's caught in the middle. The bowl now completely fills. And we've now got the entire community underwater some 20, 30 feet underwater. Everything is lost.

WALTER MAESTRI: It's going to look like a massive shipwreck. There's going to be-- there's going to be, you know-- everything that that the water has carried in is going to be there. Alligators, moccasins, you know every kind of rodent that you could think of.

WALTER MAESTRI: I think they know that, I think that they've been told that. I don't know that anybody, though, psychologically, you know has come to grips with that as-- as a-- a potential real situation. Just like none of us could possibly come to grips with the loss of the World Trade Center. And it's still hard for me to envision that it's gone. You know and it's impossible for someone like me to think that the French Quarter of New Orleans could be gone.

Lots of people seem to have short memories.

I have more confidence in Bush right now than I ever will with any non common sense Hellary or Kerry in charge.

Louisiana is suffering under what many voters get when they vote emotions over common sense.

Jindal has show much more back bone than any of the Democrats at any level of government and that includes Blanco and Landrieu.

Now I wonder what we would do if Hoover breaks. I bet there's no plan for that yet either. Like its not inevitable.

there was never a official count of how many stayed, only guessses that 80% left. obviously 80% meant 80% of the suburban areas and not the city dwellers. FEMA now has to relocate a entire CITY before people start starving to death.

Your warning is well-taken . . . I have compassion for the Homeless - I helped in supporting our Church's homeless shelter last winter . . . and every single pro we talked to said individual police clearance checks on each person and on-site security were absolutely essential . . . the cops love what we're doing (takes a problem off their hands) and they don't want us hurt and they insist we do the police check before admitting anyone to the shelter . . .

Thought you would enjoy reading that sad commentary on the projects of NO after what we were told. That's scarey to think some of those thugs are being sent around the Country.

These people are amazing. The NG and FEMA coordinating multiple efforts of this magnitude and yet all people can do is attack them.

A little rant coming.

The finger pointing should be at the Mayor, Governor, city corruption and NO citizens who ignored for 40 years an impending disaster. Few had BOBs (bug-out-bags) with even a minimum of 3 days of food and some water. Even fewer had a simple battery operating AM radio to get a warning of the impending flood.

NOLA committed suicide and few want to face that reality. This was the end stage of a "socialist utopia".
