I've been watching the journal of someone who lives in New Orleans. A friend is posting for him as he journies out of the city. Apparently there are still payphones working in the city (???), he had a meal this evening, and does not feel overly concerned for his safety and he is at the convention center.

I wish Shep would elaborate or we could get some confirmation of this.

Nope, you're not the only one.

They did release the prisoners, I didn't hear anything about doing so inside the SuperDome.

It's a horrible situation and I don't believe they could have done everything mistake free. Seems they would have at least had emergency supplies and relocation areas more readily available.

I believe it may be a different BellSouth building that the firemen may be holed up in.

FEMA *is* in MS and AL, the media just isn't covering it. They're certainly in Biloxi.

Drewsmum: I am telling you what the people there (small towns) have told me,,,,they haven't seen FEMA,,understandibly, FEMA is overwhelmed. Media can't cover it if they aren't there,,,the small rural areas.

There is also plenty of gas in the ground iin tanks n parts of MS - but they have to get power going to run gas station pumps. FEMA is bringing in generators to help with that and ALL the utility companies have sent people. It will take time. People will die.

Drewsmum: Is that what YOU want to hear when it's your family's life on the line. People will die. Wow, what a great bedside manner you have.

Gas alone will not save people

Drewsmum: I beg to differ, please follow:

1. you have gas you can run generator and therefor a/c.

2. you have gas you can drive to closest city (for them Mobile AL) and buy water/ice

3. you have gas you can drive to closest city to working atm and withdraw CASH, to purchase such goods.

4. Seeing as how most of these people will die of dehydration/heat stroke, I think a little a/c and water/food will save people. Do you get it? If you have gas, you have water, food, cash, a/c and the list goes on. Therefore, GAS ALONE will save people right now. THAT my friend, does not take a rocket scientist to figure out.

Are we sure this report about the firemen is true? I didn't hear one thing mentioned about it tonight and I was switching channels.

What channel were you watching that reported that?

I pretty much have stuck to Fox...

I cannot tolerate MSNBC OR CNN...

you know, prisoners on the run...if that were the case that might explain the reluctance of some folks to any help....they know they're going back to the big house if caught...find a gun, shoot a cop is probably their mentality

still don't know for sure, but i find it hard to believe they'd let prisoners go, but wouldn't be suprised if some made a run either...

Well from what I've heard they can bus them out but there is no where to take them. That's not being prepared and they've had years to plan on where to relocate if the levy breaks.

OSHA and the EPA have been told to take a hike by the President for the duration.

And, surprisingly, they're taking the hike.

the water is going back into the lake, its would be physically impossible to take it out with tanker trucks.

I think those comments showed more about that man than Bush.

Saw the video on CNN. Mike Myers who was next to him looked like "What the hell are you doing?"

Truth hurts -- how is it bigoted to talk about the crimes being committed in Orleans Parish compared to the rest of the area. I resent your accusation. If you cannot see the truth, then you have my sympathy but I don't believe in coddling hoodlums and drug addicts which we are seeing plenty of on the TV.

I feel for the children and the elderly/handicapped who are in this terrible situation. I feel nothing for the able bodied people that looted TV's, jewelry, tried to break into hospitals, stole guns, etc. If that makes me a bigot then I have a lot of company. The 9th Ward in Orleans is someplace I wouldn't have wanted to be in at night on a good day. Why don't you read all about Orleans Parish and all their problems long before the hurricane?

FYI, we had a basketball player here at OU that comes out of that hellhole of the 9th Ward. Great kid who was raised by his grandparents and talked about how unsafe it was for anyone to be out at night in the 9th Ward. His Mother was a drug addict and could care less. Hollis made something of himself because of his grandparents in spite of the thugs/hoodlums surrounding him.

If the men of Orleans had half the gumption of some of these Grandmothers, it would have been a better city to live. For every Hollis Price, there are tens of thugs/drug addicts in Orleans Parish. That's a fact not spin. I have heard him talk about the city he came from and how bad it was when he was growing up. His grandparents evacuated to Houston before being told which speaks volumes for them.

Next time you decide to try and paint us into a corner, think again.
