President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

Harrigan has him beat by a mile with class, integrity, and ability to report the truth. He is what I call a journalist.

Precisely what I told foxnews and I hope others echo my sentiments and let fox hear from them.

I've been thinking. We keep hearing people say, "I can't believe this is happening in America," and, "Where is the help?"

This is such a huge natural disaster, I think it is hard to believe this is happening here because we've never seen anything like it here before. I think as Americans we all feel "entitled" to some degree, because we are used to living relatively comfortable lives and because we are a wealthy nation.

I do think people are desperate and in great need. But take any of us out of our comfy homes with electricity and easy access to food, and we will all be pretty whiney. Destroy our homes and the lives we know and we will all be a bit hysterical.

I think things will continue to calm down as each day passes. This is a huge disaster that has taken many lives. And yet many lives have been saved. Those who are still alive will get over their initial shock and will hopefully come to realize they are blessed to be alive.

"those same men had any sense of decency they would volunteer on the spot to help rescue and get vunerable women, children and the elderly out of harms way.

Yep. A total lack of social mores in that group."

I think it all disappeared with womens lib.

A bunch of things such as havving a better evacuation plan, plans for communications, and pre-staged supplies, etc. We're now five days after the hurricane and significant federal aid just began arriving.

5 days to get the largest relief effort in our history assembled, and deployed is an amazing feat. Communications in New York were completely disrupted for 3 days when 2 buildings fell. You are expecting a response that our present technology cannot provide. There are 92,000 square miles of devastation that you appear to be forgetting about. If anyone has a reason to gripe it is the 2 million people outside of New Orleans that are taking a backseat because of the race politics going on in NO.

I just heard on the local news that the gas lines should be history by next week because we'll have plenty of gas.

Great news!

...and the road to recovery begins...

Everyone is losing sight of something as folk here argue about the number of days, whether Shep or Geraldo said this or that. What you are missing is that this is now a national disgrace to have people dying in the streets of an AMERICAN city. I cannot stomach the thought of children dying or being raped. Let stop talking about whether or not these reporters are grandstanding or not. The important thing is the people who are DYING before our eyes. Get it?

NO! This is not as national disgrace. It is a Natural Disaster.
Hurricane Camile hit Biloxi in 1969 and caused lethal floods
in the Shenandoah Vally in Virginia. I helped clean up after it.
My brother saw a locomotive that had been carried over a
hundred yards off it's track. Mountains fell into valleys.

Katrina is much worse. And it is still ongoing with water
still flowing into the city. Only persons that think with
their brains will be part of the solution. Cool heads will
prevail.

I just sent him the email, I said pretty much what I said earlier, following it with, We know Hillary is just playing partisan politics, what's your excuse? Get a clue!

My husband has volunteered, but the administration is so slow because there is just no leadership coming from the states, themselves and no housing available for the volunteers. They are awaiting Navy transports to house the personnel.

off subject a bit, but my husband seems to think that Harrigan's heroic rescue of the white college student stuck on that wall was really a set up and was part of his crew. I disagree,,,,did any one else catch that???

WWL coverage over the last few days. See past few threads.

WFAA reported that their copter came under fire yesterday while covering the disaster.

They just collapsed without ANY resistance after making many stupid decisions and filing the plan in the back of some dusty file cabinets, leaving FEMA wondering what the hell happened.

This is absolutely true and there's no excuse. Major municipalities all should be drilling their emergency/disaster plans on a regular basis, particularly after 9/11. But these folks couldn't even get out of the gate right.

Irresponsible prigs like Scarborough, who I read here is bashing Bush, make me ill. He, who has criticized Bush endlessly about spending in Washington, is now screaming about how the Federal Government was slow to respond? Does he have any idea at what it would cost for the Federal Government to become responsible for these local plans?

"I've heard numerous reports on TV of people being shot or being shot at, and of rescue attempts having to be suspended."

Don't forget there are alot of private citizens shooting warning shots.

I thought BOR was weird with that too..? What was up with that? He acted like he was in charge of the National Guard and the White House.

So did Whorealdo who said "Bill if anyone can get these people help, you and I can". So much ego filling one little screen.

There are probably other ways to haul gas down there but it would, of course, be very dangerous and you're not going to be able to help anyone if you get hurt yourself.
