President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

You are absolute right sir. I watched CNN and saw people dying live on TV. Americans, no matter their race, religion or economic level, should not still be suffering to the extent they are so many days after a well predicted and anticipated disaster.

I was late to work this morning because I was so overwhelmed by it all that I had to take some time to get my self together. At the conclusion of our company wide staff meeting today I requested my co-workers to take some time this holiday weekend to consider what they might do to help and pleaded that they might make some donation. My company is responding by setting up a way to donate with matching contributions. The private sector is responding, as I knew they would.

But the response to this; from the Mayor of NO, the parish councilmen, governors, FEMA, all the way up to the highest levels of our government has been beyond slow, It’s been deplorable.

One correction to your comments..that wasn't a NOPD captian..that was the Police Commissioner of NO, who should have been fired on the spot..

The road blocks in the Gretna bridge were put up last night by the parish President and Police chief. There were/are untold numbers of desperate people roaming within the parish, where most residents had evacuated before the storm, and most residences were empty. Untold amount of home break-ins and looting, arson, firefights. Parish President made a statement that he would stop them at the bridge last night, over his dead body, on a local newscast interview.

Not only that but they have a real nice housing project to deal with. Oakwood Mall knows now that it is a smoldering ruins.

You know, that is exactly what I've been thinking. I was a child during the Depression and can remember the "hobos" and wanderers who would come past our little shack begging for bread and water.

Drudge has up a blurb about a claim that black people are eating the dead.

During NPR's reporting this evening, they mentioned that some guy in N.O.--I forget his name--had a generator, and his family actually had roast beef and gravy for dinner last night.

Now I wonder if it was beef.

I've never watched people dying like that either.. I am as horrified as everyone else.

I just don't think adding to the hysteria is helpful. jmo

Believe me, I get your point! I also think Geraldo and Shep are making it WORSE. There are ways to get attention. Geraldo's and Shep's ways just caused a whole lot of folks to turn the channel.

Shep said he hasn't seen ONE Red Cross vehicle in the five days that he has been there. What happened?

Maybe Mississippi & Alabama need help, too. I know you know this, but New Orleans, contrary to the MSM hype, was not the only place in the country damaged by Katrina. Biloxi was badly hit. We seem to be forgetting about the states that had their acts together...& punishing them for it.

"NO. THAT'S 100% WRONG. He asked the other guy if he wanted to say something, and the other guy waved him off and walked off-screen."

The superior officer didn't want to comment on the Geraldo "incite-a-riot" show? What a shocker.

As I said, Geraldo's intent was to let the officer rant.
