SACRAMENTO -- Facing widespread opposition to his special election, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Friday that if voters reject a proposed spending restraint on the November ballot, he might be forced to raise taxes.
Schwarzenegger previewed a campaign theme in a morning radio interview, predicting that new taxes might be the only alternative if voters reject Proposition 76, the "Live Within Our Means" act.
Asked on Sacramento station KTKZ-1380 AM what he might do to avert future budget deficits if the spending control is defeated, Schwarzenegger said:
"Then we have to look at raising taxes, because this is the only option we have, in order to create the money. And this is why I tell people vote yes on Proposition 76 and make sure that we do everything that we can to pass this proposition so that we force our legislators once and for all to live within their means and not to continue spending money and to keep making promises to people that they can't keep."
Schwarzenegger's comments came amid a new statewide poll showing little appetite for the Nov. 8 special election that he depicts as central to his "year of reform" agenda.

PING!
Californians won't help themselves. Can we detonate a few H-Bombs along the fault yet and let it sink?
Is that a threat? I do believe he is trying to blackmail us.
There is going to be widespread voter fraud in this election, I hope Arnie prepares in advance for it.
This ought to do wonders for his re-election campaign.
So, what is the name of our next Dem governor?
Once again, the "Great Equivocator" demonstrates that we placed our confidence in the wrong guy.
What an utter disappointment Arnold has turned out to be.
Remember, Prop 76 authorizes another $10 Billion in new borrowing.
If it doesn't pass, he has no way to pay for all the social programs.
And he has shown no backbone to actually CUT anything of substance.
IMO, the Prop 76 spending cap itself is weak, but the borrowing buried
in the language is fundamental to his agenda, (i.e. borrow and spend).
The promise of electing Arnold comes true.
Then he needs to be put in the same bind Davis was in.
Blackmail is such an ugly word. I prefer 'extortion' ...
>>Then he needs to be put in the same bind Davis was in.
Davis was put in a bind because he tried to borrow ($8 Billion) without voter approval.
Arnold got that approval with Prop 57/58 ($15 Billion).
This measure includes another voter approval (approx $10 Billion). The only way to prohibit it is to vote 'No' on Prop 76. He would then be faced with either raising taxes or cutting expenses. He seems to have made his preference clear in the quotes above. CUT does not seem to be an option for him.
Heck of a choice, huh? Borrow or Tax?
"Californians won't help themselves. Can we detonate a few H-Bombs along the fault yet and let it sink?"
Ya gonna nuke a fellow freeper in safely red county?
L.A. and Frisco are what liberialize this state.
Allowing the governor to make mid-year cuts could do wonders. Right now he's boxed in by a lot of mandates, lack of support from the GOP (and too many Freepers here) and unending assault by the unions.
Dumb@$$ Arnold. (Not that every leftist wasn't already opposed to Prop 76 ANYWAY, but) now you've all but PROMISED them their long-craved goal if they DO manage to defeat 76.
Cripes. Ever hear of "game theory"? What you WANT to do is play hardball and declare that the failure of Prop 76, as the result of deceptive and misleading ads by the Leftists, will result in massive CUTS in their precious welfare plans, a further year of "emergency" borrowing from Education, etc.
>>Borrowing is better than taxation if it means spending control.
DUH! Borrowing ENABLES spending!
I concur. The legislature holds all the power in the state, and they wrote off the Gov. when his poll numbers started going south.
What I CAN see is that Dem. leadership in Sacto is very angry and very afraid of the Governator. You can feel it in their offices. He's a nightmare that they are hoping will go away. They hate the fact that the moderate state voters are taking power back.
Guess I'll be voting no then. I'd really like to see all these kool aide drinkers explaining his raising taxes.
