September 2, 2005 -- Thousands of abandoned pets are on the brink of drowning or dying of thirst as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and many more are feared dead, animal-rescue groups said yesterday. Despite very limited access to evacuated areas, rescue efforts have begun, with teams from FEMA, Noah's Wish and the Humane Society racing against time.
Many people who ended up in shelters were forced to leave their pets behind because the Red Cross and the Louisiana Superdome don't allow animals.
"I'm guessing we're going to have tens of thousands of animals affected," said Dick Green, manager of animal emergency services for the American Humane Association. "There are literally thousands of animals in New Orleans alone stuck in homes . . . going without water. They don't have food. Every day that goes on, the situation worsens."

It's time to set these weenies straight and make them understand that an animal's life is secondary to human life.
It's traumatic.
At least the dogs don't shoot when you try to rescue them.
animal-rescue groups said yesterday.
These groups and their resources should be focused on saving people instead of yammering....
God knows I love our pets. However, both my sisters endangered their lives, and almost paid a horrible price because of pet dogs.
I never said it wasn't, but any help for these animals would be appreciated.
They are pleading for help for every living thing, and there is nothing wrong with that.
I said that we should save humans. Those that loot and shoot at rescuers have surrendered their humanity and deserve to be treated as the predators they are.
Exactly. If ONE human dies because these moonbats were saving dogs and cats, they should be charged with muder (depraved indifference).
Now PETA can put up or shut up.
I have two dogs. And a cat. Three beautiful, loving pets. But I'd throw every one of them overboard to save one human being.
It's sad watching kids have pets taken away. It's sadder watching your spouse drown.
Priorities dictate that you save people first. Money needs to be directed to helping people, not animals.
People like those in the civic center are secondary. /sarcasm.
True liberal sentiment. I really wish my people would learn this. Dogs and cats can swim, birds can fly. and dogs will drink from a toilet bowl. My only real concern is disease from dead animals.
cry me a freaking river.
The fact that there are a few groups devoted to saving lost and suffering domestic animals does not mean humans are being ignored.
Please ignore the vitriol on this thread.
people first
