Dying Pets Break the Hearts of Helpless Rescuers...Please Help the Truly Helpless

September 2, 2005 -- Thousands of abandoned pets are on the brink of drowning or dying of thirst as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and many more are feared dead, animal-rescue groups said yesterday. Despite very limited access to evacuated areas, rescue efforts have begun, with teams from FEMA, Noah's Wish and the Humane Society racing against time.

Many people who ended up in shelters were forced to leave their pets behind because the Red Cross and the Louisiana Superdome don't allow animals.

"I'm guessing we're going to have tens of thousands of animals affected," said Dick Green, manager of animal emergency services for the American Humane Association. "There are literally thousands of animals in New Orleans alone stuck in homes . . . going without water. They don't have food. Every day that goes on, the situation worsens."

This makes me so mad. People are donating all that money to the red cross! How much money can the red cross use to shelter and feed people? Why not send it to other organizations that will help them over the long term and address the issue of pets too. how sad.

When all the humans have been helped, then we can turn our attention to dumb animals.

We're talking about privately funded efforts here.

How on earth is having a few privately funded animal rescuers, pulling stranded animals out of the water, going to hurt the effort to rescue humans?

And as I pointed out above, the animal rescuers will very likely be able to pinpoint the location of stranded humans too (quite possibly rescuing some humans themselves --and if that's not possible, they can relay the stranded persons' locations on to the Coast Guard and National Guard).

You are a sorry soul if that is how you view it. I view it as the best of what it means to be human.

You do not understand the scope of what is happening. To advocate rescuing animals at this point is criminal behavior that is as bad as those shooting and looting.

Yeah...and what about the nurses in the NICU's, PICU's, and ICU's hand ventilating patients (most probably gone by now) and having IV's started on themselves so they can keep going, having been on the job how many days now?

Let people choose their causes according to their own ability and talents. The only wasted energy I can see is from people who would break the spirits of those who are trying to do something that matters to them.

......
Frankly the part about animals not getting water is untrue. The problem is they have too much water. Animals can consume polluted water which is currently around them and survive it better than humans. Their stomaches, digestive system is designed for extreme measures. For crying out loud, dogs eat other animal feces and live.

Human rescue has been going on for days.

And much more needs to be done before we start wasting resources on animals.

anyone expending resources on rescuing animals when people are in danger should be prosecuted.

Prosecuted??!!
So people in America aren't free to spend their own money on a charity of their choice?

WOW you are truly going off the deep end here

Why don't you get off of this thread?

Why don't you take it over to DU because you sound just like them when faced with an opposing argument!

NOT hsus.org.

They think pets are slaves.
It's an animal "rights" group, not a humane society.

It's my friggin hard earned money and I'll donate it to whomever I like. And in this case it's been split equally between organizations saving people and helping the animals.

I never said anything about donations, only that rescuing animals now would be criminal.

People are as attached to their pets as they are to their families.

A sure sign of mental illness in a situation such as this.

Non-life threatening situations make it easy to place as much emphasis on animals as humans. In New Orleans, one ounce of effort saving animals before every human has food, water, and shelter, is criminally stupid!

This reminds me of the case of the woman in CA who was killed by a mountain lion which, when caught, was put to sleep. Funds were set up for the human orphans and the animal "orphans".

The fund for the cubs got more $$$ than the fund for the children!

Once again you miss the whole point of this post. I have donated money and will be donating time to the American Red Cross as well. What have you done?

"crickets"

Sorry. This is an emergency situation where time is of the essence. Allocating resources right now to saving animals is ludicrous and criminal.
