September 2, 2005 -- Thousands of abandoned pets are on the brink of drowning or dying of thirst as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and many more are feared dead, animal-rescue groups said yesterday. Despite very limited access to evacuated areas, rescue efforts have begun, with teams from FEMA, Noah's Wish and the Humane Society racing against time.
Many people who ended up in shelters were forced to leave their pets behind because the Red Cross and the Louisiana Superdome don't allow animals.
"I'm guessing we're going to have tens of thousands of animals affected," said Dick Green, manager of animal emergency services for the American Humane Association. "There are literally thousands of animals in New Orleans alone stuck in homes . . . going without water. They don't have food. Every day that goes on, the situation worsens."

How is your electricity produced?
Belive me, I'd much prefer to be picking up fido than agonizing over which of several baby's live's to save when I have to decide which has the best chance to live when I have only 2 hands and have to choose which one. BTDT. Wasn't fun.
And I purport that your priorities are backward. I have no problem with your donations, but I do have a problem with using boats to save animals when people are still dying.
If you think saving animals should come first, then try to argue that point.
Im part of a bird rescue group, all the time.. we have people driving trains of cars to try to get to some of our members who have taken in pets and need food.........
I have parrots, macaws, a cockatoo, a quaker and two small dogs....what I do with MY TIME and MY MONEY, is MY BUSINESS, and you better believe it involves saving helpless creatures ... the Gove and every other agency in America will be helping people...so helpless little animals get my help ... and if anyone doesnt like it, well pU I really could care less....Preaching on here,Erik Latranyi get your butt out and HELP....ARE YOU ??? doesnt sound like it.. what a loser
I used to think like this guy many years ago when I thought I knew everything like some folks here do now. Then I started living with dogs in the house and learned a bunch of new things.
Thanks for posting this. It'll be the first time I ever donated to anything like this. That is not because I think any animal's life is worth more than a human's (I hope I am never put to the test, though!) but because I think money will not be a problem saving human lives, but it might be for animals'.
I think the record is stuck (or is that CD?)
Cool!
Let me know if you need anyone to foster large birds...I have the space.
I sure will!! Im looking for now people that are in the Houston area to drive from there to some of our members near and around La and Miss.....
and thanks!!
if you dont mind, email me your city/state

I don't think anyone that you've been preaching at here has that problem.
Forget the pets, save the people.
People spend their money where they want to spend it. If its for animals, so be it. It beats wasting one's money by going to the theatre to see a worthless piece of feces made by idiots for idiots.
Help any way you can..Salvation Army, Animal rescue, Red Cross, local efforts, or Boys Clubs (yes, they were leveled on the Ms Gulf Coast). The job before us is enormous unlike anything that has happened within the last 100 years.
Well, yeah, this was just evil. No either/or, just evil. Insanity.
Let people choose their causes according to their own ability and talents. The only wasted energy I can see is from people who would break the spirits of those who are trying to do something that matters to them.
I'm sick of the sanctimonious armchair rescue workers who don't have enough compassion to extend to the ones least able to help themselves, the pets left behind. I bet they really don't have that much concern for the people left there either. No telling how many animals are going to die drinking that tainted water.
Excellent post! I couldn't agree more.
i do believe that humans come first, but these humans who have nothing left could be uplifted by the thought that some where some how these animals whom they concider part of their family are being possibly saved. especially the children. they have no idea what is going on except they are hungry and thirsty and hot. you would have no idea what a difference that woud make to them. as much as the movies they show these children in the shelters. so please take the time to throw a few pets in the trucks and buses. their owners would more than surely share their food and water with these small members of their families.
What about rescuing both Humans and animals?
It seems you are the idiot here?

Thank you.
Yes. When the people are accounted for, I'll go back for the animals. Not before. People first. I'm not going to waste time getting an animal off a car roof and into my boat when I can spend that time looking for human survivors.
When you stand before God next to the child who drowned because you stopped to rescue a cat, what will you tell Him?
Why don't we start rescuing animals rather than those criminals and drug addicts who shoot at doctors and police officers trying to help?
