Dying Pets Break the Hearts of Helpless Rescuers...Please Help the Truly Helpless
NY Post ^ | 9/2/2005 | Heidi Singer

September 2, 2005 -- Thousands of abandoned pets are on the brink of drowning or dying of thirst as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and many more are feared dead, animal-rescue groups said yesterday. Despite very limited access to evacuated areas, rescue efforts have begun, with teams from FEMA, Noah's Wish and the Humane Society racing against time.

Many people who ended up in shelters were forced to leave their pets behind because the Red Cross and the Louisiana Superdome don't allow animals.

"I'm guessing we're going to have tens of thousands of animals affected," said Dick Green, manager of animal emergency services for the American Humane Association. "There are literally thousands of animals in New Orleans alone stuck in homes . . . going without water. They don't have food. Every day that goes on, the situation worsens."

Belive me, I'd much prefer to be picking up fido than agonizing over which of several baby's live's to save when I have to decide which has the best chance to live when I have only 2 hands and have to choose which one. BTDT. Wasn't fun.

We are donating to the organization because we want the rescue efforts for animals to begin immediately. Not in 3 days. Not in 3 weeks. Immediately.

And I purport that your priorities are backward. I have no problem with your donations, but I do have a problem with using boats to save animals when people are still dying.

If you think saving animals should come first, then try to argue that point.

When was it decided that caring for pets or domesticated animals was a liberal mindset?

I used to think like this guy many years ago when I thought I knew everything like some folks here do now. Then I started living with dogs in the house and learned a bunch of new things.

Thanks for posting this. It'll be the first time I ever donated to anything like this. That is not because I think any animal's life is worth more than a human's (I hope I am never put to the test, though!) but because I think money will not be a problem saving human lives, but it might be for animals'.

No, because there are those that do not understand the magnitude of this crisis

I don't think anyone that you've been preaching at here has that problem.

We can't even get to the coast to help the animals. The State veterinarian has sent a couple of veterinary emergency response teams already and is organizing more teams right now. The problem is enormous and will take a larger effort than has ever been undertaken. First save the people and then go after the animals. That time is coming up for that in the next few days. The numbers of animals homeless and lost after Andrew was legion. This is bigger than Andrew ever was.

People spend their money where they want to spend it. If its for animals, so be it. It beats wasting one's money by going to the theatre to see a worthless piece of feces made by idiots for idiots.

Help any way you can..Salvation Army, Animal rescue, Red Cross, local efforts, or Boys Clubs (yes, they were leveled on the Ms Gulf Coast). The job before us is enormous unlike anything that has happened within the last 100 years.

DING DING DING> We have the Winner! < Ding Ding Ding

Let people choose their causes according to their own ability and talents. The only wasted energy I can see is from people who would break the spirits of those who are trying to do something that matters to them.

I'm sick of the sanctimonious armchair rescue workers who don't have enough compassion to extend to the ones least able to help themselves, the pets left behind. I bet they really don't have that much concern for the people left there either. No telling how many animals are going to die drinking that tainted water.

I don't want to make a bigger issue out of this than necessary, but... it's on threads like this that you really see the extent to which the conservative movement has been eroded from within. For so long, liberals had the world convinced that they were the only ones with "compassion." They wore their bleeding hearts on their sleeves without so much as a whit of concern about results. And as we conservatives were constantly excoriated for our "lack of compassion," we began to develop a mistrust of the very concept. And so you see some people in our movement today who appear to go out of their way to appear as callous, cold, and--frankly--uncompassionate as possible.

Excellent post! I couldn't agree more.

i do believe that humans come first, but these humans who have nothing left could be uplifted by the thought that some where some how these animals whom they concider part of their family are being possibly saved. especially the children. they have no idea what is going on except they are hungry and thirsty and hot. you would have no idea what a difference that woud make to them. as much as the movies they show these children in the shelters. so please take the time to throw a few pets in the trucks and buses. their owners would more than surely share their food and water with these small members of their families.

Good grief, I did not know there are some many freaking idiots on freerepublic.

Saving some cats and dogs is the equivalent of Noah saving species of animals from extinction. LOL.

The animals in MO are not the last of their kind.

ALL RESOURCES SHOULD BE AIMED AT HUMAN RESCUE.

A carcass of animals is a problem. A would rather have an animal carcass problem than another human corpse problem.

Good lord, the IDIOTS have come out.

You're actually encouraging leaving a pleading animal when you could save it???

Yes. When the people are accounted for, I'll go back for the animals. Not before. People first. I'm not going to waste time getting an animal off a car roof and into my boat when I can spend that time looking for human survivors.

When you stand before God next to the child who drowned because you stopped to rescue a cat, what will you tell Him?

Why don't we start rescuing animals rather than those criminals and drug addicts who shoot at doctors and police officers trying to help?
