September 2, 2005 -- Thousands of abandoned pets are on the brink of drowning or dying of thirst as a result of Hurricane Katrina, and many more are feared dead, animal-rescue groups said yesterday. Despite very limited access to evacuated areas, rescue efforts have begun, with teams from FEMA, Noah's Wish and the Humane Society racing against time.
Many people who ended up in shelters were forced to leave their pets behind because the Red Cross and the Louisiana Superdome don't allow animals.
"I'm guessing we're going to have tens of thousands of animals affected," said Dick Green, manager of animal emergency services for the American Humane Association. "There are literally thousands of animals in New Orleans alone stuck in homes . . . going without water. They don't have food. Every day that goes on, the situation worsens."

So, you don't support the draft? No. Look what happened the last time this country had a draft. And we'd sure look like major hypocrites heading into places like Iraq claiming to be spreading freedom, while using a bunch of conscripted solders.

Would you two like to have a list of every charity that FReepers are donating to? That way you would be able to decide which ones are worthy and which ones aren't.
Or maybe we should all run our charitable donations by the two of you before we make them, just to make sure that you approve.

Do you make this known to your family and friends? Yep. We're all selfish bastards. All of us would save our animals first, then, if we had room in the boat, we'd save you.

You're an absolute loon, mate. Get a grip.So when people are dying and resources are scarce, you advocate the rescue of animals over people?
Stop the name-calling and argue with some civility.

Um, to donate money to save cats and dogs when people are dying and otherwise in desperate need is criminal. Doing it right now, as I type! Charge me.
To: Erik Latranyi
Perhaps he was referring to choosing a dog over you.
To: sinkspur
Uhhhh.... sorry. The full phrase is: depraved indifference to
human life.
Sorry for your obvious confusion.

I don't think I would be able to leave my dog.Just like this little boy,my dog would have to be pulled from my arms, that's why he simply must, if at all possible have his dog back

I hate to ask, but does anyone know what is being done with the confiscated pets? There's a big shelter in northern LA that has made room for more of the animals. As always, they are looking for transports and foster homes. I will be volunteering to foster later tonight.

That's true.
Don't get me wrong: I LOVE my five cats, dog, and parakeet.
Had I lived in NOLA, I'd have left on Friday with all my animals with me.

Somebody needs to come drag you out of your comfy chair and get you down to N.O. Where do you live?If I lived closer, I would be right there. Pennsylvania - where we have had floods and people needing rescue before animals.

Seems to me like this would be a great way for the pet food industry to get involved.

This is true, but the history of child welfare in this country was started by the animal welfare organizations of the late 19th Century:And now some advocate putting animals before people.

I love my dog. Sometimes I think she's a member of the family, but realistically, I'd toss her (crying, of course) to save my neighbor's child. I'd find a way to do both.

the story about Snowball is not about a dog. It is about a little boy.thank you that's why I am trying to find out more about this dog and his owner
I did send an e-mail to Humane Society and I will send one to Animal Planet and Fox, CNN etc.
They may pick it up as a human interest story
After all the terrible news I imagine that a story of this little boy being reunited with his dog would help bring some hope back
