President to speak at 9am ...
Yep. And Michael Brown said on TODAY that the additional 30,000 Guard troops would "be there by Monday."
MONDAY????
I realize there's not a lot of area to stage things, but where the hell are the logistics people from the military? These guys can figure this stuff out on the fly.
Brown is in over his head, Blanco is in over her head, and Nagin is completely worthless. And Chertoff's bureaucrat-speak is getting on my nerves. Where's Bernie Kerik when you need him?
There needs to be order restored and massive food drops, TODAY!!
If there's not, and people are dying on the streets, then I'm going to have conclude that nobody is in charge.
I really do think that martial law is declared by congress and not the President.
Just out of curiosity, do you know where I could get a copy of the New Orleans Master Plan, which, if properly prepared, would have included provisions and a long term plan to ensure the levee system is adequate. They usually are online, but I ssupect the server is under water somewhere...
THIS WAS NOT BUSH'S MAJOR SPEECH OF THE DAY. Please shut up now.
Some of these press characters are so predictable it's humorous. And some of them are obviously on these threads.
There aren't as many people in any of the affected towns in Mississippi as there are at the Morial Convention Center right now.
How is it, then, that Eisenhower could send troops to Little Rock? Did the governor invite them in?
Well let's see.
9/11 was localized. Physical damage was localized. It was fairly easy to get relief efforts in and get things moving.
NO is under feet of water. No electericity. Access roads out. Poor communication abilities. People scattered around. Gangs shooting at relief workers.
Big difference!
Or that the newly (this year) strengthened area of the levee, concrete strengthened, is part of the levee which failed
"The Buck Stops Here."
What do expect the President to do? Wave a magic wand and everything will be okay? Grow up.
I read somewhere (I've read so much I can't remember where) that Nagin commented that Bush should send in some John Wayne guy because he already had and when that John Wayne guy started cussin things started to happen.
A lot of people on this thread expect the impossible. You are the first people to scream about small government and getting the government out of our lives, and the first people to scream that the federal government needs to solve disasters *immediately.*
This is a failure of *LOCAL* government. It is a failure of *STATE* government. Once the federal government got involved, things stopped FAILING and are getting on the right track. When you have a city's police force walking off the job, like NO's did, what do you do if you are the federal government to PREPARE for that???????
The heads that should roll should be those of New Orleans government officials. It was their responsibility to set a tone of law and order but instead allowed a "Lord of the Flies" atmosphere to prevail. Blame them, not President Bush.
You are a bunch of crybaby whiners on this thread!
All major news media links are posted on one site:
C-SPAN, FOX News, ABC, BBC, SKY News,
CNN, MSNBC and even lousy CBS:
Good answer!!!!
Of course he should, and failing that he should have landed AF1 - in the flooded airport - and started turning flood water into potable water all by himself, and restored the power grid, and flushed the sewer system, and saved all the sick in the hospitals, and ...distributed the loaves and fishes and... given the looters all they wanted, but stopped their bullets from flying out of the pillaged weapons and ...asked Cindy Sheehan to drop by and...
After all, Superman could do all of these things, and
when a computer game doesn't go well, one justs presses reset - new game - Why can't President Bush do that!!!
Sorry for the rant, MEG, I am just building on your comment, but it is not aimed at you. It is aimed at all the "shouldas" coming out of the woodwork onto FR.
This whole problem is almost 100% due to the mayor and governor actually INCOURAGING looting at the start of this.
Bush is doing his best to take charge now that things have gotten out of hand.
Until we start hearing reports of looters being shot... this isn't gonna start to get any better.
I'm with you, sinkspur.
There should be a frigging armada of military helicopters approaching the city as a show of force. Symbolism matters in a time like this.
I will never forget the feeling I had on 9/11, standing on my apartment building in NYC a mile from ground zero, when the first two F-14's showed up. They raced down the Hudson at low altitude, climbed high over Staten Island, and then began a patrol around the city. I knew at that moment that we were going to be ok. It was purely symbolic, but it gave me great confidence and peace. The people of New Orleans need a similar gesture.
Which is a good thing imho...
One of the rules of crisis is to always take credit for what you didn't do if offered, since you will always get blame for what is not your fault, whether you want it or not.
This is a NATURAL disaster of unbelieveable scale. There is nothing Bush could or should have done before now that he did not do.
However, when Marine One lands in N.O., Bush will accept title to the UNNATURAL disaster which is now unfolding. He and his people have obviously decided that this is preferable to inaction, to taking the blame for things that are not their fault.
This being so, I hope to God he's ready to take charge. If he isn't, he's going to own every dead baby and every raped woman after noon today.
That's very unfair.
But that's show biz.
