Namibia Expropriates First Farm
BBC ^ | 2 Sept 2005 | Staff

The Namibian government has begun the expropriation of white-owned farms. The former owner of the first farm to be forcibly purchased, Hilde Wiese, said she was paid about a third of the sum she had asked for - about $500,000.

Mrs Wiese and the 60 black workers and their families living on the farm will have to leave by the end of the year.

The Namibian government says it aims to settle close to 250,000 landless people on the farms it expropriates.

Expropriation orders have been served on 18 commercial farmers, but the president of the agricultural union says there is no comparison between the forced sales and the violent farm invasions that took place in neighbouring Zimbabwe.

Except that the landless blacks on the farms had to leave. Huh. Sounds like Zimbabwe in 2003.

So whatever food production they *do* have, they're going to roll over with tents and huts? Good decision making there, it's so surprising to me that these countries are so poor..

It won't be long before they are starving and asking for food aid.

There is no lack of land in Namibia. The land is so barren that the population that can be supported on subsistence farming is a fraction of the current population, and commercial scale farming is required to make up for the poor land. There is a severe lack of land that can sustain commercial scale production of food so that the country does not starve to death.

Capitalism sucks until you consider all of the alternatives.

Another "Basket Case" in the making. Land redistribution is a noble ideal which means that within a short period of time you load the land up with people who have no clue how to farm and then everyone starves. Works every time.

The definition of insanity is to repeat behavior and to expect different results.

This is another example as to why we should ignore recommendations of the Euros, who apparently condone this sort of thing.

And worse, probably. I think we will see arrests, executions, etc. to "enforce" it.

I'll never send another dollar to african charities. Waste of money! Why enrich the dictators, kings, & despots?

What incredibly stupid people!

New technology means that more can be produced on less land and also that land that might not have been viable before now may be.

As you point out, capitalism could offer a better way out. It's not pretty, but if people can acquire and hold property, why won't they do it? People don't get out of poverty by getting hand outs, even though the intentions of the donors may be good. (In Namibia's case, I would probably say not-- it is more likely an intolerance thing. But I could be wrong)

Helping out of a one time situation works.

Creating permanent underclasses by permanent payments fails.

Try reallocating grades and see who starts wailing. Why would it be different with property?

Foreign aid= poor people in rich countries pay money to rich people in poor countries.

Primary reason why it's useless.

A Kenyan economist made an appeal to please stop all foreign payments so that they could actually reform and recover. He got little attention in the old media. Small wonder, as it upsets their pretense at being lord/lady bountiful.
