He is definitely laying it on Blanco. Heard a replay on WWL radio, where ther also report that a lot of NO cops have turned in their shields.

NY had 2 previous blackouts (I was there for one of them), so they've had some experience.
Also, it's a different story managing a city without power than a city without power, water, food, and under 20 ft of water. The sad story is that by all accounts it was well known that NO was a disaster waiting to happen, and no-one did anything.

This guy is covering his ass! Even going after the governor, a fellow democrat? This is big time CYA. He's showing his ignorance at the same time. I think he's drunk.

This guy's cover is blown. He failed in his duty before the hurricane hit, he (and the governor) have been awol ever since, and now he's bawling like a girlie man. Drunk as a skunk, a real slick dude, fast talker, trying desperately to lay blame on everyone but himself.

I'd like to see proof that this mayor has been all over town.

I heard on a scanner yesterday (or the day before, not sure) that they were asked for armed guards to escort him.

If he'd been traveling through the city...he'd probably have been shot by now by those thugs that screamed at Jeff Goldblatt..."F*&% the cops."

I already heard it and so don't need the link. The last thing I ever wanted to hear was the mayor of a city calling for backup. The man sounds so desperate anf frustrated! People shooting at police?!? I ignored claims of terrorists taking advantage of the NO tragedy the other night...now I'm beginning to seriously wonder. Even drug runners aren't that idiotic as to shoot at police while their city is in tatters.

No one short of God could have fixed levee breach.

Once they go, they go. The force of all that water erodes what's left of the levee and makes repairs impossible until the water stops flowing.

Now that it has stopped flowing, they're repairing them.

The better question is why the local government didn't evacuate everyone BEFORE the hurricane hit. Duh...

I'd guess the poor man is tired and he's cursing because he knows people are dying and not enough is being done to help them. I'd be pretty mad too if I kept being told 'help is on the way' and yet, days later, it's yet to arrive. I'm getting sick of the constant sniping at people caught up in hell.

The mayor's right on this madness about whether the governor's signed off to give the Feds authority...if your neighbor's house is on fire do you wait for their permission before you see if they're OK or call 911?

Reporters can get in there, why can't medics and food, water? Where is FEMA? What if this had been a terrorist nuke or chemical attack? Four years after 9/11 would be able to respond at all levels of govt to any major disaster. This ought to be a wake up call that we're not prepared for another attack.

America is going to fall apart if we can't stick together as AMERICANS in a time of tragedy and crisis.

The people down there no more 'deserve it' than NT deserved 9/11.

Martial law's a bit much for Pete's sake. I'm confused about him calling for the NG when the NG is ALREADY there evacuating people. It was the NG that evacuated the Superdome.

And considering how well everyone behaved themselves in NYC on 9/11 and during the blackout, I'm sure that the NYPD could have handled the situation without the National Guard.

I agree with the essentials that Nagin and the Gov of Louisiana are fools, Nagin is most likely a drugged up fool but the total breakdown of society in certain areas of NO was caused by generations of Democratic Party machine. Most of the folks who do the work and pay their taxes, while perhaps not Republicans at least are more conservative and would not have voted Nagin the Bozo into office. This catastrophe is not 9/11, it's completely different. Insideous, quiet and on-going horror that will probably continue for months. Yes, the clean up of 9/11 went on for ever but the buildings are still falling in New Orleans and people are still dying clinging to their attics and trying to walk, wade swim out perhaps surrounded by dead bodies, snakes, and some allegators. These people are not seeing help arrive to them, or if it does they are left somewhere to fend for themselves because the relief effort is desperately trying to save more people. Where was the back-up area to bring the people they pluck from the roof-tops set up? And now these gangs of drug addicts are shooting at everybody. Do the rescuers leave the innocents to die of desease with the bad guys--that's surely on the way--and knowing N.O. pretty soon.

"He wasn't nuts at all, maybe impassioned about getting things done to address the problem."

Actualy, he sounds so desperate and angry that he DOES sound like he's starting to lose it. Like he's going to give himself a stroke and be no good to anyone. He needs to put on a calmer facade for the public.
