Besides personal responsibility which is obviously lacking.....there should have been a local plan....there are prisoners in jails, who are under the control of the government; there are ill/injured who were/are in hospitals...they appeared not to have an emergency plan coordinated; elderly in nursing homes; and tourists (the airlines closed down the day before the hurricane hit)....plans for these people, at the very least, should have been in place in case of an emergency....I heard a reporter say that some prisoners were released back into the public.....that's an unacceptable "plan."

As I watch Blanco and the Mayor of NO it reminds me of why we should elect our leaders on local leadership issues and not "more beads for everyone" or "I am a woman and I hate Bush so vote for me".

I agree, food and water are essential. So why is it that none of these citizens heeded the warnings and prepared for a major hurricane?

Why did none of these citizens maintain a hurricane kit with five days worth of nonperishable foods, fresh drinking water, medicine, spare clothing, medical supplies, etc.?

All of these citizens have been warned by "the government", and the news media that just such a disaster was possible. Where is the personal responsibility? Where is the planning and preparedness on the part of individual citizens?

Excellent questions! Could it be that many of them have been on the public dole so long that they have no concept of taking care of themselves. It hasn't been five minutes that I remarked to a coworker, "We regularly stockpile supplies for just such emergencies, why are so many in New Orleans unprepared?" Sounds like a democrat plan for votes - sit back, relax, we'll take care of you.

So what's your point? When your have a disaster of this scope and size, it means that people will suffer, die, be injured, etc. The Federal Government is mounting one of the biggest, if not the biggest effort, in our history to provide assistance. People have unrealistic expectations that FEMA can be everywhere to meet the needs of everyone. There are limits to what can be done in the first four days after such an enormous disaster.

Has it occurred to anyone that the powers that be let the
situation get totally discombobulated and out of control.
1. make the mayor look like the idiot that he is.
2. relocate the inner city riffraff.
3. getting there grubby hands on federal disaster money
4. a springboard for more right grabbing regulations.

just a thought.

Right and i think that local leadership and plans are needed for logistics. That is where the bottleneck is.

No question about it.

I knew New Orleans had a problem with its police force, but I didn't realize how incapable they were of dealing with routine law enforcement matters.

This guy almost makes Mayor Shirley Franklin look tough by way of comparison.

Rudy is not obsessed with whether somebody puts his willie in the right hole, so he just won't do for some of the folks here.

I don't care about Rudy's willie or anybody else's, but Rudy wants your guns. All of them. Whether you're law abiding or not.

In Rudy's world, only people employed by Rudy should be armed.

Has Nagin begun blaming the Governor for eating all the strawberries in the food locker? Perhaps top city officials can get together and relieve the poor man of his command responsibilities. Nagin is in way over his head - and I'm not talking about the flooding.
The government should pay Rudy some big bucks to fly in. Put a competent adult back in charge until the situation is brought under control.

Both the mayor and the governor should be in jail or under house arrest.

"Sounds like the corruption of the government in the city is coming home to roost..."

It goes way back. Huey P. Long even further back than that. NO has been corrupt and politicians have lined their own pockets with $$ earmarked for the levy system for years and years.
I am sorry if they rebuild and let people back in again that have no way to evacuate when this happens again, and it will happen again. I will turn of my TV and move away when this happens again. It isn't that it will or will not happen, it is only WHEN? A three year old could have planned better for this. I mean give me a break. They attempted to move the ocean and think they could keep that amount of water out.

Now the sorry Rats are so low they want to gain some political advantage over this, and they caused it.
Simple mind boggling

The words "too little, too pate" have just been used as a headline regarding the administration's response. That's it. Attamps at rationality are officially over and the '08 campaign commercials have begun. It's no longer the fault of local officials, even though other states don't have the same problems. I'm disgusted.

I guess the president should have ordered the USS Enterprise to use the transporters to evacuate the people who refused to evacuate and are now demanding help YESTERDAY.

That is the WORST thing I've ever heard out of a politician. Nagin should resign right now and get out of the way, because he sure doesn't seem to be good for anything.

CNN anchor Carol Costello seems to want the president to go into New Orleans. Is she an idiot??????

The local station I watch has a reporterette in Biloxi.

This morning she wondered why the president was making all those people sweep up the debris.

She said that no one had come in to do it for them.

Amazing!

>Instead of rioting and looting, they helped one another.

Hold on there. Don't forget, amid the chaos that is going on, people are helping each other, all over that city. Good people, people who are in the same situation as everyone else in that city.

I'd like to know what the Mayor and his city council did with the $$$$ they recieved to plan and prepare for disaster. there is NO planning from what I've seen, nothing.

being a major port of entry don't you think that NO and the state would have come up with a PLAN? one that could at least have SUPPLIES for a week or two? One article I read said people going into the dome were to bring supplies and expect to stay for up to 5 days. New Orleans did not even have adequet supplies and equiptment in their dome to take care of those who were evacuated there from what I've read, I hope that turns out to be wrong but it sure looks that way now. THe federal gov. can not make plans for every city in the US, that's why the allocated funds to the cities to plan and set up. \

as for response time, the guard needs to be called up, if it isn't thier state they have to load and transport equiptment. I beleive that when Bush declared the emergency they did start their callups and begin planning....which is more then the state of LA seems to have done. when the first troops arrived they probalby had the duty of setting up a base somewhere to work from. I think they've done great.

It also takes time to call in personal and supply the huge ships the navy is sending in. I wonder how many of those ships sent after the tusami were actually already out of port before that diaster, all those things do make a difference in how long it takes to get from point a to point b. I have no idea how long those ships had been in port, if they needed a few hours to reload them, or even how quickly they could get personal back from leaves

He's in Baton Rouge leading from the rear.

His city should join him there, and ask the governor and Mayor what they are doing.
