I think the point was that even though every cop in New York City was downtown dealing with the attack, the cop-less parts of the city didn't degenerate into chaos. I don't buy the food-and-water excuse, the looting in N.O. started before the hurricane was even over.

If NO had government officials working at getting the needed help, rather than cursing & screaming on the radio like a thug, or acting like a complete incompetent stupid woman on tv, things would begin to improve!

And according to Harry Connick, Jr. on TODAY Show, the mayor moved his headquarters to Baton Rouge days ago, he's not even in New Orleans, according to Connick.

So, he's sitting comfy in Baton Rouge, but placing all the blame on the Governor (she deserves plenty)...but accepts none for his own gaffs?

The mayor's right on this madness about whether the governor's signed off to give the Feds authority.
____

Anyone correct me if I am wrong. But, didn't the Fed's declare LA,AL and MS disaster areas BEFORE the hurricane hit?

This opened the door to Fed funding so it was available to the states BEFORE this happened.

They had two days to get them out or get them safe.

The states have the first responcablilty to their citizens. The state governs its counties (Parrish) and the counties over the local municipalities and cities. The Federal government is there if the state can not provide. If the money was there, the storm on its way and a levee breach predicted with a storm this size, why didn't the states react. Didn't they have an action plan for this? This is not 9/11. 9/11 was one city, you can send help to that location. This is the coastline of THREE STATES! They all knew this could happen for years, they seen it coming for days and it still became a major loss of human life and suffering. These state governments are the ones that are supposed to be protecting their citizens first. Anyone that blames Washington for the states not being prepared for something they knew could happen and seen coming should reset their reality watch.

Morning tol, I don't know about y'all but I am rechecking my own emergency disaster plan. Canned goods, batteries, water, etc. Double checking. Of course where I live we have competent officials and imagine, our Mayor is a Dimrat, but he's got a plan. He has shared it with us, everyone knows what it is.

Sorry to say, but as cold and callous as it sounds, yes that is exactly what I am saying.

In a catastrophe such as this there needs to be an absolute zero tolerance for any looting and that includes food and water.

Once any looting is allowed or condoned, the immediate result is a breakdown of law and order that results in anarchy and chaos. Once anarchy and chaos commence their is no longer any justice for anyone. The end result is that more people die.

but food and water get pretty essential after a day or so.

I agree, food and water are essential. So why is it that none of these citizens heeded the warnings and prepared for a major hurricane?

Why did none of these citizens maintain a hurricane kit with five days worth of nonperishable foods, fresh drinking water, medicine, spare clothing, medical supplies, etc.?

All of these citizens have been warned by "the government", and the news media that just such a disaster was possible. Where is the personal responsibility? Where is the planning and preparedness on the part of individual citizens?

It seems the only citizens in New Orleans who had a plan were the looters. This is a sad picture of the American citizen being broadcast worldwide.

The President declared it beforehand.

Absolutely right....and the mayor would have great input as to what the emergency plans needed to be....well before the emergency......which would need to be coordinated, as well, with the governor.....it sure doesn't seem the state/mayor had any such plans. It's also my understanding that National Guardsmen were originally sent in, UNARMED, to restore order. That was a "plan" doomed for failure.

If I were there, I would not wait for help to arrive I'd walk west on I-10.

The buses are coming in on it and I could walk out on it.

And our Media isn't telling people to just leave New Orleans and to....

walk west on I-10

That appears to have been sorely lacking, as well.

This guy is covering his ass! Even going after the governor, a fellow democrat? This is big time CYA. He's showing his ignorance at the same time. I think he's drunk.

The way Nagin described the rampant drug flow and use in his own city was unbelievable. He used the term "jones" which I believes refers to a drug addiction or a refill of one's drug of choice. He sure dropped the ball on cleaning up his city and is paying the price with these murders, rapists, looters, and un-freakin'-believable pandemonium. He's a incompetent boob and like you said, he's just covering his butt.

I understand your distress.

You should know that the president has called for congress to come back to DC for an emergency session to release aid money. The NG and Coast Guard has rescued thousands of residents who were too stubborn to leave. The NG is evacuating survivors for two days.

There are 13 million litres of fresh water there and milliuons of MREs. The US military was called in the day before yesterday to do rescue (including aeriel), emergency medical treatment, heavy equipment for evacuations in aresn't they can't otherwise get to.

I don't know what miracle you expect the federal government to be able to perform, but people are being evacuated (which they should have done before the storm) and fed and watered and are receiving medical care.

He may be tired but he is nothing more than a ranting Bush basher. His only excuse is that he is hooked on Fed aid for all his welfare voters.

Aid IS coming to those that are not shooting at the aid deliveries. His making excuses for addicts is pathetic.

Reporters can get in there, why can't medics and food, water? Where is FEMA? What if this had been a terrorist nuke or chemical attack? Four years after 9/11 would be able to respond at all levels of govt to any major disaster. This ought to be a wake up call that we're not prepared for another attack.

Reporters are different than the logistics needed to support 50,000 people. That said, FEMA is in there big time. We are talking about an enormous disaster that is spread over an area of 90,000 square miles and involving millions of people. The MSM may be focusing on NO, but there are many thousands more elsewhere throughout Mississippi and in Alabama who don't have food, water, electricity, etc.

The reporting reminds me of the Iraq war. The focus is on the exceptions rather than placing what is happening in context. People are being helped in a 24/7 operation that is bringing assistance to hundreds of thousands. The amount of resources employed is unprecedented. The MSM needs to show more of the positive side of what is happening. Feeding this image of looters, dead bodies, and people voicing their anger about the ineptness of the federal government etc., is politically motivated. The NYT is leading the pack. That should tell you something.

If blame must be assessed for NO, the state and local governments are the most culpable. They waited too long to declare a mandatory evacuation (one day before) and failed to get the federal government involved until it was too late.
