Obviously hardly anyone posting has been to the deep south and seen the type of poverty that these people live in. The deep south is a 3rd world country. The people that are left are looting trying to survive. No food, water, shelter, anything and you cry that people are going to break into these stores for their own survival?? Do you live in the south or have you only visited? They have always had areas where people lived in poverty. Things didn't really get out of control until gangs set up business in the larger cities in the south. That would be considered an influence from the North and West instead of a problem generated from only poverty.
There used to be a time when families living in poverty had a community where they depended on helping each other instead of shooting one another. Actually, looting of non-survival items in times of disaster is fairly rare, historically. And all poor neighborhoods are not created equal. The biggest single factor that correlates with criminal behavior is lack of a biological father involved in child-rearing: back when whites had higher illegitimacy rates than blacks, they also had higher crime rates; today that situation is reversed, though whites are catching up again. But no, these people are criminals, not survivalists.
