28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

"When did Fallujah become more safer than NO?"

ON Monday!!

Did anyone just see the report on MSNBC about the convention center. They have NO supplies there FGS. It's something I cannot imagine, where is the water? Food?

It's criminal at this point that the police just pass by without any word of when help will come."

It's hard to comprehend, but it looks like the city officials told them to assemble there, and then just forgot about them ever since. They said they haven't seen or heard a word since they were told to go there, and clearly no food or water drops either.

The President had to call the Mayor of NO and tell him to evacuate. Before then, all he and the governor did was twiddle their thumbs, that would be AFTER they got their own families out.

........

All the mayor did, was say he couldn't call for a full city evacuation and he was constantly asking his "lawyers" what to do, legal advise. End of story. LA's officials were and are woefully inept to lead an ant farm let alone a city or state.

There is nothing to misread. It is absolutely amazing to me that you and the other poster are trying to claim that I am writing off all other devastation other than NO. Utterly amazing. At the same time both of you you do it, you make my own argument by saying the people are damn glad they aren't in NO.

Utterly amazing.

I know this is tiny tiny potatoes, but I'm hosting my MIL's estate sale this weekend. I had my niece make a sign for a really big jug to take contributions for the Salvation Army. I'm telling y'all about this to show you that no matter how small your contribution, it all will help.

Also, I heard on NPR yesterday some guy from a refugee center telling the talking head about clothing donations. He said a lot of folks wonder what happens to the clothes we donate. He said those clothes are golden to people who left their homes with a pillow, blanket and what they were wearing. Clothes with elastic are very popular...it's one size fits all.

Even tho Red Cross and Fema say they just want $$$....where are they going to spend it? I saw the SuperKMart in Biloxi...they need a major clean-up on ALL aisles! I wonder what the address for the Astro Dome is? :)

I wonder if there's any connection here?

Good point. Further, there may be a few TROPists on the ground. Imported, or jail-bred. Who'd shoot at a rescue helo?

There's a funny thing about disaster relief that is correctly handled. It's a thing called TRIAGE.

We do disaster training all the time in my profession. We don't expect our victims to wear signs. You must be kidding. This situation has been horridly mishandled and lots of people are dying because of it.

Honestly, My FRiend, when I see moms with babies sweltering with no water, I have to cry.

No one deserves this, no one.

And why, if Sheppard Smith and NBC news can get on the streets, why didn't they bring some water with them?? /rant off/

Sec. Chertoff is on CNN and he's really spinning this badly. He's essentially saying that FEMA is struggling because of the unprecedented scale of the disaster...a catastrophic flood in a major US city and hurricane damage along the gulf coast.

Sorry, this is a load of BS. It's not like this result wasn't predicted in the wake of a cat4/5. It was predicted up to a year before the actual event. The feds have really dropped the ball. Five days after the event people are still being raped, bodies still rotting, looters still looting and people still dying in public. And don't give any excuses about local incompetence hindering efforts. Thats a cop-out. Given local incompetence, the Feds should have been in override mode from the moment Blanco started having a breakdown on live TV.

This is a huge debacle on every level.

They prepositioned all there assets.

I don't think anyone prepositioned enough assets to deal with the flooding of New Orleans, yet we've all been aware that a major hurricane would sink the city, especially in light of Ivan's near-miss last year.

I KNOW the people should have gone, and next time they will.

This is turning into an opportunity for Jackson and Sharpton to slam Bush. No matter how many people are saved now, no matter what they do for the refugees, Bush will take a hit.

My immediate concern is to take care of the good people who are staffing that hospital.

The Nation will have to deal with what to do with the NO refugees after this is over, because EVEN if they did evacuate, they'd still be homeless and unemployed, just like the rest of those poor souls in Biloxi, Gulfport, etc...God Help Us.
