28,000 National Guard troops are deployed to the disaster areas in Mississippi, Alabama, and to Louisiana, where SWAT teams are working to combat the looters and shooters in New Orleans. Additional 1400 National Guard troops are being deployed daily.

Shootings reported at a New Orleans hospital, rescue boats, and a military helicopter, while conditions continue to deteriorate at the SuperDome amid refugee deaths and chaos. Evacuation of New Orleans continues.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert has voiced serious doubts about rebuilding New Orleans with federal funds, while assuring the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need. New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin issued a "desperate SOS."

Doctors at two desperately crippled hospitals in New Orleans called The Associated Press Thursday morning pleading for rescue, "We have been trying to call the mayor's office, we have been trying to call the governor's office ... we have tried to use any inside pressure we can. We are turning to you. Please help us," said Dr. Norman McSwain, chief of trauma surgery at Charity Hospital, the largest of two public hospitals.

The Port of New Orleans is now open to shallow draft vessels. Congress is reconvening in an emergency session. International offers to assist the U.S. have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States.

I know, but the rumors of "sabotage" were because people were reporting the water had been rising on Sunday NIGHT, before the hurricane hit.

Convention Center has been known to have 5000 refugees in it for a couple of days now . . . mentioned numerous times on various threads and local media feeds . . . there is NO EXCUSE for FEMA not to have known about it, none . . . the average well-informed FReeper knows about it . . . does FEMA even have people dedicated to cyber-info gathering? They need to.

Sadly, PTSD wil take its toll as well.. plus imagine all the physical dangers as they sort and maneuver debris of all sizes, shapes and forms.

Prayers for those on search and rescue and recovery missions across the affected areas.

"Jesse Jackson on LK just stated he believes people are exagerating about the snipers shooting at rescuers."

Well then Jesse get Wolf Blitzer and a CNN cameramna and load them up in a copter and go in there and prove that snipers aren't shooting at copters and rescuers!

I saw your post about the sofa floating away and someone else's about a young woman's doll collection. It's concrete and something they can grasp on to and understand. I can't imagine how horrible the last few days have been. First a hurricane and then the people around them, a threat. Living a normal life one day and living in a third world environment the next. The sad thing is that are probably only several miles from safety and security.

why couldn't WE airdrop some food and water on the roof of the hospital?

Because snipers were holding the patients, doctors and hospital personnel hostage so they could steal the ambulances.

Actually, I just heard Frist on CNN say that only a few would actually be in the Senate. They just are going to pass the bill unanimously...already have consent from all members of the Senate...without the actual Senators being in the Capital. They do not need a quorem.

the media is sympathetic to Blanco, so she cannot be effectively demonized, as a Dem and a woman - forget it.

even the conservative media isn't really doing enough to talk about her incompetence. pressure needs to be brought against her for sure. you would think someone, like Bobby Jindal, would break and start telling it like it is.

you are correct. I should have been more specific. They asked the nurse about the gangs. She said people were being turned away at the door.

No doubt she complained behind the scenes, because what do I see less than an hour later - she's back on with Paula Zahn, same sort of questions, whole different feel to the interview, much "nicer" on the part of CNN.
